The Indian Premier League (IPL) team, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have announced that their former player Dinesh Karthik will take up a new role at their franchise, starting next season.

Karthik who had retired from all forms of cricket after the IPL 2024 season. He made his international debut back in 2004, at the age of 19 and had a 20-year long career.

The 39-year-old was a commentator during the recent T20 World Cup 2024 held in the United States and West Indies, in which Team India ended up as the champions.

What is Dinesh Karthik's new role at the RCB franchise?

The IPL franchise, RCB, announced on the social media platform X, saying that Dinesh Karthik will take up a new role at the franchise, as a batting coach and mentor, starting from the next season.

"Welcome our keeper in every sense, 𝗗𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗵 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗸, back into RCB in an all new avatar. DK will be the 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿 of RCB Men’s team," the franchise posted on X

"You can take the man out of cricket but not cricket out of the man! Shower him with all the love, 12th Man Army!"

In a press release, RCB's director of cricket, Mo Babat confirmed the new role for Dinesh Karthik as batting coach and mentor of the franchise.

"DK is an excellent addition to our coaching group. He was thrilling to watch on the field, and I’m sure he will be just as impactful as a coach. His longevity and track record as a player speaks volumes about his skill and dedication. I know he will bring that same quality and commitment to this new professional chapter."

"DK’s experiences across both international cricket and the IPL, make him a huge asset to RCB. I have no doubt that our players will benefit hugely from his expert support. As a player, DK demonstrated an elite mindset under pressure and a real drive to keep evolving his game. I’m looking forward to him instilling those same qualities and values into our players, and in particular, our batters.  We have exciting times ahead and it’s great for us that we can retain DK’s involvement, as someone who knows what it takes to play for RCB and our special fans," Bobat added.

Karthik had played for RCB for the first time in 2015. After stints with Gujarat Lions and Kolkata Knight Riders between 2016-21, he returned to the Bengaluru franchise in 2022.

He scored a total of 326 runs in the 15 matches during the 2024 season at a strike rate of 187.36. He played an instrumental role as a finisher in the team and made great impacts, particularly in the last two seasons.
