Since its inception the Indian Premier League (IPL) has become the perfect platform for established players to regain their form, and for unknown talents to establish themselves.

Due to the Twenty20 league format's popularity post-IPL, many countries have adopted the format, with even those like the USA having a T20 competition of their own. Such tournaments provide more avenues for out-of-form players to bring themselves back into the eyes of national team selectors.

However, there is a bit of ambiguity as to whether Indian players can play in overseas Twenty20 leagues.

Can Indian players take part in overseas T20 leagues?

As per the current Board of Council for Cricket in India (BCCI) policy, a contracted player can only play in an overseas Twenty20 tournament if they have retired from all formats, even IPL. In case they are still representing India (and therefore BCCI) in any format, they aren't permitted to play in an overseas tournament, and can only feature in IPL.

What is BCCI's policy on retired players competing in overseas leagues?

Therefore, as of now, players who have retired from all formats of cricket can play abroad, even if they are contracted to BCCI. However, latest reports suggest that the Board is rethinking this policy and is considering putting a cooling period after the player retries, to prevent them from immediately joining a league. A No Objection Certificate from the board could also be made compulsory if the players want to be involved in any capacity in Indian cricket.
