West Indies crash out! Who else will qualify for the 2023 Cricket World Cup in India? image

Giants of world cricket at one point in time, West Indies have failed to qualify for an ODI World Cup for the first time in history after they went down against Scotland on Saturday.

Batting first, West Indies put up a humble total of 181 runs which Scotland chased down for the loss of just three wickets in 43 overs.

With the defeat against Scotland, West Indies can no longer make it to the main tournament as Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe have six points each in the super six stage.

How many World Cups have West Indies won?

West Indies won the first two editions of the ODI World Cup held in 1975 and 1979 and then reached the final of 1983 where they lost to India.

How have West Indies performed in the 2023 World Cup qualifiers?

West Indies were grouped in a very easy group in the qualifiers along with Zimbabwe, Netherlands, USA and Nepal.

And what should have been a straightforward group became the stuff of nightmares for the Windies. The team, led by Shai Hope, had star players like Nicholas Pooran, Kyle Mayers, Alzarri Joseph and Jason Holder.

But they lost out to an inspired Zimbabwe and then were beaten in a super over by the Netherlands. West Indies just about qualified for the Super Six stage, finishing third in the group.

What next for West Indies?

West Indies will next face Oman on July 5 before taking on Sri Lanka in their final game of the qualifiers on July 7.

Which teams are the favourites to qualify for the World Cup now?

As things stand, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe look to be the favourites to qualify for the World Cup in India. Scotland will look to capitalise on one of the leading two slipping up. However, it seems unlikely as of now. The Netherlands also have an outside chance of making it through.

The 2023 Cricket World Cup will be held in India between October 5 to November 19. England and New Zealand will lock horns in the opening match of the tournament. The final will be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
