IPL auction 2023

The IPL franchises have recommended a two-year ban on overseas players who pull out of the league after being bought at the auction without a legitimate reason.

They expressed their concerns during a meeting with the IPL governing council, stating that players' last-minute withdrawals harm team strategies and performance.

The franchises clarified that they would understand if a player pulled out due to injury, family commitments, or international duties. They highlighted the need for clear communication about players' availability at the time of the auction.

What is the impact of late pullouts?

Teams pointed out that unexpected withdrawals force them to scramble for replacements from a limited pool of talent. This affects their planning and performance. They gave instances where players, after being bought at base price, later demanded higher payments to join.

Proposal for auction registrations

The franchises also proposed that all overseas players should be required to register for the mega auction, not just the mini-auctions. They said that several prominent players skip the mega auctions to attract higher bids in the mini-auctions due to the limited availability of top talent.

The franchises believe that players and their managers are trying to manipulate the system. They suggested that if big-name players go unsold in the mega auction, they should then be allowed to enter the mini-auction the following season.

In the 2022 mega auction, Ishan Kishan fetched the highest bid of INR 15.25 crore. In the most recent mini auction, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins received higher bids, indicating the trend of players opting for mini-auctions for better deals.

The IPL franchises are pushing for these changes to ensure fairness and stability in the league. By implementing these measures, they hope to prevent last-minute pullouts and maintain the integrity of team strategies and performances.
