Bangladesh won the toss and chose to field first in a game that was important for both sides in terms of Champions Trophy qualification, although Sri Lanka did have an outside chance of making the top four if they were to win both their remaining matches.
What is Timed Out in cricket? Why was Angelo Mathews given out against Bangladesh?
In the 25th over of the first innings, Sadeera Samarawickrama was dismissed by Shakib Al Hasan when he hit the ball straight down the throat of the midwicket fielder to leave Sri Lanka 135/4.

Angelo Mathews was due to come in to bat next, but after he arrived on the ground, his helmet strap snapped and he pulled out before facing a ball. While asking for a replacement helmet, Bangladesh appealed for him to be given out 'timed out', and the umpires eventually agreed. Mathews was given out and sent back.
But what is the Timed Out dismissal about?
According to Law 40.1 of the MCC's Laws of the Game,
After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.
In addition in this case, the ICC's playing conditions for this dismissal stipulate a limit of 2 minutes, which take precedence over the MCC's Laws of the Game. The bowler does not get credit for the wicket, unlike hit wicket.
Mathews had not been ready to face the next ball within the time limit, and as a result was deemed out. He seemed to be telling the umpires that he had been ready until the strap broke (which was not in his control), but the laws do not provide any leeway for this.
Mathews received the dubious distinction of being the first player in men's international cricket to be given out in this fashion.
