Iyer was also a part of the Indian team that played in the 2023 Cricket World Cup that was held in India. Iyer played an important role in the team that reached the final of the tournament, but was defied by the Aussies in the final in Ahmedabad.
It was a few weeks after the World Cup that the decision to remove Iyer from the central contract was made by the BCCI.

What did Shreyas Iyer say about his BCCI contract removal?
In a recent interview, Iyer stated that there was a case of miscommunication between him and the BCCI. The KKR skipper said that he had decided on taking a break after the tremendous World Cup that he had. He stated that there were some decisions that did not go in his favour but at the end it all worked out correctly.
I had a tremendous World Cup. I wanted to take a break after that, work on my body & build my strength around certain areas - due to lack of communication, there were some decisions that didn’t go in my favour. At the end of the day the bat is always going to be in my hand & it’s upon me to perform and win trophies. I knew that once I win the Ranji Trophy and the IPL, that will be an apt answer to whatever happened in the past. Thankfully, everything fell in the right place. We have a lot more trophies to win in the future.
Iyer was dropped from the Indian squad that is currently participating in the on-going ICC T20 World Cup in the United States and the West Indies despite winning the IPL as the captain of the IPL team. India won their opening game against Ireland on Wednesday and will be facing arch-rivals Pakistan in their upcoming game on Sunday.
