After India's 4-1 series win over England, the Board of Control for Cricket in India Secretary Jay Shah announced an incentive scheme for Test players. In the past few weeks, cricket legends like Steve Waugh have called for conservation of the sport's most traditional format that has been endangered by the proliferation of T20 Leagues around the world.

On Saturday, India and England faced off on day three in the fifth and final Test of their bilateral series at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala.

The hosts began the day at 473/8, leading by 255 runs. However, they added just four runs to the overnight total as James Anderson dismissed Kuldeep Yadav to take his 700th Test wicket, and Shoaib Bashir got rid of Jasprit Bumrah.

Thereafter, India took over, as R Ashwin's five-wicket haul reduced the visitors to 113/6 before Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets. Kuldeep Yadav took the final wicket of Joe Root, consigning England to defeat by an innings and 64 runs.

What is Test Cricket Incentive Scheme announced by BCCI?

After the victory, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah took to social media to announce the details of a new programme initiated by the board, named the Test Cricket Initiative Scheme. The intention of the scheme is to encourage the red-ball game in India.

Under the scheme, which starts from the 2022-23 season, players will be rewarded with bonuses based on the number of Test matches they play in a season. This is in addition to what they are paid in match fees (Rs 15 lakh per match) and what centrally contracted players are paid.

This comes on the back of the BCCI encouraging national team players to give more importance to domestic and international red-ball cricket. The board also dropped Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan from the upcoming season's list of centrally contracted players, reportedly for not taking part in the Ranji Trophy when away from national duty.
