Hat-tricks are a very rare occurrence in cricket, let alone the T20 World Cup. Taking three wickets on three consecutive deliveries is no joke and a very difficult task to pull off. Despite the difficulties, there are still a number of legendary bowlers that have managed to achieve the feat in the T20 World Cups.

In today’s story, The Sporting News, takes a look at the number of hat-tricks in the T20 World Cup right from 2007 up until the ongoing 2024 ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies. 

How many hat-tricks have been taken in the T20 World Cup? 

In the nine editions of the T20 World Cup so far, a total of nine hat-tricks have been taken by seven bowlers from different nations participating in the tournament. Pat Cummins is the only bowler to pick up two hat-tricks in the history of the tournament.

The first ever hat-trick was taken in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007. Following this it took fourteen long years until 2021 for fans to witness another hat-trick in the prestigious tournament. Ireland’s Curtis Campher took a brilliant hat-trick against Netherlands in the 2021 T20 World Cup in UAE. 

Cummins took the first hattrick of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 against Bangladesh in a Super 8 clash. He became only the second player after Brett Lee to take a T20 World Cup hattrick for Australia, coincidentally Bangladesh were the victims, once again. 

In what was his second hat-trick in consecutive matches, Cummins got a wicket on the last ball of the 18th over and on the first two balls of the 20th over, against Afghanistan. In the very next fixture of the Super 8s, England's Chris Jordan took a hattrick for Engoand in a must-win game against USA.

Who took the first hat-trick in the T20 World Cup?

Australia’s legendary pacer took the first ever hat-trick in the T20 World Cup in the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2007. Brett Lee achieved this feat against the Bangladeshis and also became the only player to take a hat-trick in both 50-over and 20-over World Cups.

How many bowlers have taken multiple hat-tricks in T20 World Cups?

The only bowler to pick up multiple hat-tricks in T20 World Cups is Pat Cummins from Australia.

He has picked up two hat-tricks in the tournament, with both coming in consecutive matches of the Super 8, against Bangladesh and Afghanistan, during the T20 World Cup 2024.
