Following India's defeat to West Indies in the second ODI on Saturday, more questions were raised over Suryakumar Yadav's performances, and his place in the Indian ODI setup.

India coach Rahul Dravid speaking after the game said,

"Surya is a really good player, no doubt about it but he would be the first one to admit that he ODI game has not been up to the mark of T20, he is also learning ODI - we want to give him as many opportunities we can & then it's up to him to utilize it."

So what has Surya's record been like in India colours in the limited-overs formats?

What is Suryakumar Yadav's record in T20 internationals?

Suryakumar Yadav was brought into the Indian T20 team on the back of his stunning performances for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

He started his international career with a bang, lofting his very first ball from Jofra Archer for six in a home series against England.

After 51 matches, Surya has notched up 1780 runs at an average of 45.6 and a strike rate of  nearly 175. In exactly half of those innings, he has scored at least 30 runs, with 14 half-centuries and three centuries.

All three hundreds, along with five of his fifties, have come at a strike rate of over 200.

What is Suryakumar Yadav's record in ODIs?

Surya made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in July 2021. His ODI career got off to a promising start with a string of 30+ scores in his first six innings. His personal best is 64, scored against West Indies in February 2022.

Since then, however, Surya has only made more than 30 twice in 17 innings. In that same time period, he has never faced more than 30 deliveries either.

On the face of it, it seems that Surya's high-impact style in T20s have not translated well to the slightly longer format of ODIs. He still scores briskly, with a strike rate of 100.4, but rarely plays more than 20-25 deliveries.

Perhaps the best role for him in the ODI setup would be as a finisher, as using him up the order at number three or four seems to not suit his style of play.

Will Suryakumar Yadav play the 2023 World Cup?

In his current form, Surya does not look likely to make the India XI for the upcoming World Cup. If the management keep faith in his ability, he may make the squad. If he wants a place in the XI, his form will need to pick up quickly.
