The ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has captured the attention of Indian fans, with the tournament hotting up as the race for the playoffs comes to a tense end. There will be no respite from cricketing action after this season either, as the T20 World Cup starts just five days after the final.

However, looking beyond the global tournament, the future of the Indian national team is at a crossroads. Current coach Rahul Dravid is set to step down after his tenure ends in June, and the BCCI invited applications for the role from May 13.

Will Stephen Fleming become India's head coach? BCCI set sights on CSK coach as Rahul Dravid's replacement - reports

There are several contenders for the role, including India great VVS Laxman and former Australia coach Justin Langer. On May 14 however, another name popped up in the running; former New Zealand opener Stephen Fleming.

According to the Indian Express, the BCCI has been impressed by Fleming's successful stint as coach of IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings, as well as his record of improving players and cultivating a good dressing room atmosphere. The report also mentioned that informal discussions between Fleming and the BCCI have taken place through the IPL, although nothing is confirmed yet. Apart from CSK, he has also coached Joburg Super Kings, Texas Super Kings, Melbourne Stars and Southern Brave on the franchise circuit.

Given his close ties to the Super Kings group (player in 2008 and coach since 2009), it remains to be seen whether the Kiwi is willing to leave the India Cements-run franchise, especially for a job that will require him to be away from home for almost 10 months a year.
