How many times have SRH won the IPL? Sunrisers Hyderabad team history, list of seasons, best players image

Sunrisers Hyderabad have been a very competitive franchise in the Indian Premier League since being founded in 2012.

Replacing the Hyderabad-based Deccan Chargers for the 2013 season, the Sunrisers are owned by Indian mass media company the Sun TV Network and they've amassed a huge following in the IPL since.

But what about their history, prowess and reputation in the IPL? And who are the best and most famous players to pull on a Sunrisers shirt?

Here, the Sporting News runs through the Sunrisers Hyderabad history and their success dating back over the past decade in the IPL.

How many IPL titles have Sunrisers won?

The Sunrisers haven't had as long as some of their rivals to pick up successes in the Indian Premier League; they've won the tournament just once in their history, in 2016.

The Deccan Chargers, the Sunrisers' predecessor who competed between 2008 and 2012, picked up the title in 2009. The Sunrisers have been runners-up on one occasion when Chennai Super Kings beat them in the 2018 final.

Sunrisers IPL history

Making their debut in the 2013 IPL campaign, Sunrisers Hyderabad retained 20 players from the Deccan Chargers, which left slots open for 13 players for their first season. Kumar Sangakkara captained them in that debut season, in which they came a respectable fourth in the group table and reached the play-offs.

The crowning moment in Sunrisers' history, however, came in 2016 when they beat Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final. They set 208-7 after batting first with captain David Warner making 69 off 38 balls and then restricted RCB to 200-7 in a thrilling final, somehow clawing back a win after Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle had amassed 111-0 after 10.2 overs.

Two years later, the Sunrisers were back in the IPL final after another very solid season. They won nine of their 14 group matches to sit top of the table before the playoffs, but then came up against an inspired Shane Watson who blasted CSK to victory in the final. The Aussie all-rounder smashed 117 not out off 57 balls to easily see the Super Kings past the Sunrisers' total of 178-6, after captain Kane Williamson had made 47 and Yusuf Pathan 45 not out.

Sunrisers best players

Sunrisers perhaps haven't had the all-star names that some other franchises have boasted over the years, although they've still been graced by some quality players. David Warner is their all-time leading run-scorer, while India seam bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the leading wicket-taker. Alex Hales stood in for Warner in 2018 when he'd been banned from cricket for his part in the Australian Test team's ball-tampering scandal.

Kumar Sangakkara was the side's first captain, a mantle that Warner and then Kane Williamson took on in later years, before the recent appointment of talented South African batter Aiden Markram who will take charge for the 2023 season.

Jonny Bairstow played for the franchise between 2019 and 2021, while his fellow Yorkshireman and huge English prodigy Harry Brook is on board for 2023.
