What did James Anderson say to Shubman Gill?
During an interview with the Tailenders podcast, Anderson disclosed the content of his conversation with Gill.
"I said something to him like 'Do you get any runs outside India?' and he said 'It's time to retire'," added Anderson. "Then two balls later, I got him out."
The incident occurred on Day 2 of the fifth Test, adding drama to the already intense match. Despite the exchange, Gill showcased his batting prowess by scoring 110 runs, including an impressive lofted shot off Anderson for a six.
During the post-match press conference, Gill opted to keep the details of his conversation with Anderson private, emphasizing the need for confidentiality between players.
"I think it would be better for both of us to keep that chat in private," Gill remarked during the press conference.
The Dharamsala Test was significant for Anderson as he reached a milestone of 700 wickets during the match, despite England ultimately losing by an innings and 64 runs.
Whereas, Gill's performance throughout the series was commendable, as he amassed a total of 452 runs in nine innings, securing the second spot on the list of highest run-scorers.
Is Shubman Gill a subcontinental genius?
If we take a closer look at the stats, then Anderson does stand vindicated. Gill's average in Tests at home is 41.38 which drops sharply to 32.70 in overseas conditions.
Moreover, if we shed light on his performance in each country then his struggles become even more evident away from home comforts. He has struggled in England (14.66), in South Africa (18.50), and even in the West Indies (22.50).
Only in Australia, he averages a healthy 51.80. He has scored just one century on foreign pitches and that too in Bangladesh, where conditions are almost similar to that of India.
