Is Shubman Gill an Ahmedabad flat-track bully? India star's dismal record outside Narendra Modi stadium detailed image

Shubman Gill is regarded by many as the next big thing in Indain cricket. But while he has made stellar starts to his ODI and Test careers, his T20 record in India colours is slightly less impressive.

Gill's overall numbers in T20 (international and IPL) are quite good, but have they been boosted by a favourable record at one ground?

Is Shubman Gill an Ahmedabad flat-track bully?

As seen in the following graphic, Gill has an exceptional record in Ahmedabad but an average one away from the Narendra Modi stadium in 2023.

Looking further back, Gill's overall numbers in the IPL since his debut for Kolkata Knight Riders see him averaging 37 at a strike rate of 134 in 88 innings.

In Ahmedabad, his average shoots up to 67 with a strike rate of 160. But rather than attributing the uptick in form to this particular ground, it may simply be a case of home comforts for Gill.

Is Shubman Gill just significantly better on 'home' turf?

Prior to playing for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL, Gill's home ground was Eden Gardens, with the Kolkata Knight Riders. His record there is also better than his overall numbers.

At Eden, Gill averages 38 at a strike rate of 145. In addition, his domestic home ground of the IS Bindra Stadium in Punjab has seen him play two IPL innings there, scoring 67 and 65 not out.

His three T20I innings away from India have seen him score 3, 7 and 6. But with only nine innings in India colours, the sample size is perhaps too small to make a judgment on Gill either way.

For what it is worth, his two innings of note for India in T20s have come in Gujarat; 126 not out in Ahmedabad and 46 in Rajkot.

What next for Shubman Gill and Team India?

Gill and India will be in action next on Sunday, 13 August, as they look to win the ongoing T20I series against West Indies in Lauderhill, Florida.
