Critics had raised concerns about Iyer allegedly neglecting domestic cricket despite being declared fit by the National Cricket Academy (NCA). However, Nitin Patel, the head of the NCA, clarified that Iyer was fit and available for selection as per the handover report from the Indian team after the second Test match against England.
"Shreyas Iyer is fit and available for selection as per the handover report of the Indian team after the second Test match against England. There are currently no fresh injuries reported after his departure from Team India," stated Patel in a communication to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).
Despite this confirmation, sources close to the player revealed that Iyer has been battling back pain, a chronic ailment that necessitated surgery last year. His return to domestic cricket is expected to address some of the criticisms regarding his absence.

Moreover, there has been a lot of talk after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) excluded Ishan Kishan and Iyer from its list of centrally contracted players.
Earlier, in a stern warning, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah had cautioned centrally-contracted Indian players against prioritizing the Indian Premier League (IPL) over domestic cricket.
The admonition came amidst notable players like Kishan, Iyer, and Deepak Chahar showing reluctance to participate in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, which sparked concerns about their commitment to domestic cricket. With the Kolkata Knight Riders captain now being named in the Mumbai squad for their upcoming Ranjit Trophy semi-final, TSN takes a look at his Ranji record.
