The Women's Premier League Season 2 kicked off on Friday, and how!

Mumbai Indians played Delhi Capitals in a blinder of an opener. The reigning champions got the Capitals' number once more, with a thrilling win, courtesy of S Sajana.

The city of Bengaluru echoed cheers of S Sajana, who ensured that the title-holders sealed the victory on opening day in dramatic fashion.

What happened in the opening encounter of WPL 2024 between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals?

After being put into bat, the Delhi Capitals posted a mammoth total of 171 runs on the board. Skipper Meg Lanning provided a solid start to the Capitals before Alice Capsey scored 75 off just 53 balls. Indian superstar Jemimah Rodrigues bashed a quick fire 42 runs to bolster the target to 171. 

Amelia Kerr and Nat Sciver-Brunt, who were both expensive otherwise, picked two wickets each with the ball for the defending champions.

Getting onto the run chase, Mumbai Indians' Yastika Bhatia (57 off 45) and Harmanpreet Kaur (55 off 34) scored half-centuries each, for the side to stand a chance.

However, when Harmanpreet was dismissed on the penultimate ball of the game, MI still needed 5 runs and in walked the debutant S Sajana to face the last ball from Capsey. The Keralite, undeterred, hammered a six to bring an end to the tournament-opener in terrific fashion.

What next for Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals?

Mumbai Indians play their next match of the campaign against Gujarat Giants Women on Sunday, February 25. Delhi Capitals, who would look to secure their maiden win of the new campaign, lock horns against UP Warriorz on Monday, February 26. 

Both matches are scheduled to be played at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
