Shikhar Dhawan and Nathan Ellis got the job done in either innings as the Punjab Kings beat the Rajasthan Royals by five runs in the Indian Premier League.

Dhawan scored an unbeaten 86 off 56 balls in the first innings before Nathan Ellis ended with figures of 4/30 from his four overs.

Prabhsimran Singh got PBKS off to a great start in the powerplay and finished on 60 runs off 34 balls following a great catch from Buttler to dismiss him.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa only faced one ball before retiring with an injury, while Jitesh Sharma scored 27 from 16 balls. Dhawan then took control of the match and led Punjab to a respectable first innings total of 197.

Jos Buttler was not able to open the second innings with the bat due to an injury, affecting the rhythm of the RR batting lineup.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravichandran Ashwin came out first, scoring 11 and zero respectively before heading back to the dugout. Buttler scored just 19 off 11 before firing the ball into his own pads, allowing Ellis to catch the ball off his own delivery.

Sanju Samson then attacked on the front foot, scoring 42 off 25 balls, but Devdutt Padikkal could not help him at the other end. He struggled to time the ball, forcing Samson and Parag (20) to be more aggressive.

Shimron Hetmyer and Dhruv Jurel then put on an unbelievable partnership of 62 off 27 balls to take the game down to the wire, but Sam Curran got the job done in the last over.

The Sporting News provided over-by-over updates and commentary of the IPL match below.

RR vs PBKS final score , updates from the 2023 IPL at Barsapara Cricket Stadium

PBKS WIN! RR cannot complete the comeback as Punjab Kings win by five runs. Curran keeps his composure in the final over, conceding just one boundary.

WICKET! Hetmyer heads back to the changing room after being run out. He tried to get back for two but Jurel did not want the second, leaving Hetmyer is no mans land. 12 needed off three balls to win.

RR 19th over (182/6): WOW! Jurel now joins the party and scores three boundaries, including one six, off Arshdeeps's final over. RR need 16 off the last over to win. What a finish this could be.

RR 18th over (164/6): Hetmyer is starting to tee off as Curran concedes 19 from the over. The batter hit two sixes and a four to give RR a glimpse of hope.

RR 17th over (145/6): Ellis ends with figures of 4/30 from his four overs. His wickets in this innings have swung the game in PBKS' favour as he is a contender for player of the match,

RR 16th over (129/6): Hetmyer goes for a few big shots off Chahar's over, but fails to connect cleanly with any of them. This game is all but over now.

RR 15th over (124/6): Unless Shimron Hetmyer produces a special innings, this game is over for RR. They have not been able to build a strong enough partnership in this innings to chase the total down.

WICKET! Padikkal's disappointing innings comes to and end as Ellis gets his fourth wicket now! He beats the batter for pace and this match is in PBKS' hands now.

WICKET! It is the wicket that PBKS wanted! Ellis gets his third wicket of the match as Parag skies the ball and Khan takes the catch.

RR 14th over (121/4): Arshdeep completes an economical third over to keep PBKS on the front foot. Parag is proving to be a dangerous player, and Dhawan will want to get him out sooner rather than later.

RR 13th over (115/4): Padikkal edges a delivery off Raza to pick up his first boundary while Parag ends the over with a maximum. RR are still in this game, but this partnership will be vital.

RR 12th over (102/4): Parag comes in and smashes a huge six to bring up the 100-run mark for RR. Padikkal has to help him at the other end now otherwise PBKS will stroll through this innings.

RR 11th over (91/4): The pressure was on Samson as Padikkal is really struggling to time the ball. PBKS are in the driving seat now.

WICKET! Samson is gone as Ellis gets his second wicket of the match! The skipper looks for a big shot after a quiet over, but Short takes the catch in the deep.

RR 10th over (89/3): Punjab are fielding really well on the boundary rope to reduce the number of fours and sixes scored by the Royals. However the hosts are still getting a good amount of runs each over.

RR 9th over (81/3): Raza gives away five wides in the over to give Rajasthan the runs they needed. There is more dew on the pitch now so the bowlers will need to be very accurate.

RR 8th over (70/3): Samson scores a good boundary against Chahar to keep the runs flowing. They will want to stay on top of the asking rate to make sure they won't be overwhelmed at the end.

RR 7th over (63/3): Brar quickly gets through his over to keep the pressure on RR. Samson and Padikkal will need to build a big partnership here.

RR 6th over (57/3): Both sides will be somewhat happy with the powerplay. RR have kept up with the required run rate while PBKS have taken three wickets, including the ones of Jaiswal and Buttler.

WICKET! Ellis takes the huge wicket of Buttler with a brilliant catch! He hits the ball against his own pad and Ellis dives forward to complete the wicket off his own bowling.

RR 5th over (48/2): Brar bowls the first over of spin, but Samson hits back-to-back boundaries to accelerate the Royals' run rate.

RR 4th over (39/2): Samson joins Buttler at the crease as Arshdeep has a mixed start with the ball. He has taken two wickets but conceded 23 runs as both batters hit a six in his second over.

WICKET! Ashwin fails to make an impact on this innings as he is out for a duck! He struggles to time the quicker delivery from Arshdeep and skies his shot. Dhawan completes the wicket with a simple catch.

RR 3rd over (25/1): Curran bowls his second over and almost has the wicket of Buttler, but Harpreet Brar fails to hold onto the ball during his diving attempt. Buttler immediately punishes them on the next ball with a cracking four.

RR 2nd over (16/1): The Royals will be disappointed with the dismissal of Jaiswal, but pleased that Buttler is now out in the middle. Ashwin may need to play a similar innings to Dhawan.

WICKET! Arshdeep adds to his superb bowling record against RR as he claims the wicket of Jaiswal! The batter tries to swing the ball to the fence but picks out Short inside the 30-yards circle.

RR 1st over (7/0): Jaiswal hits Curran's first ball for six as he opens the batting with Ashwin. Buttler seems to have picked up an injury at the end of the first innings. He should still be able to bat later on.

PBKS 20th over (197/4): Holder does a great job with the final over, taking a wicket and conceding just seven runs. The Kings set the Royals a target of 198 to win. Dhawan finishes with an unbeaten 86 off 56 balls.

WICKET! Buttler takes another brilliant catch off the bowling of Holder as Khan heads back to the dugout. Two balls remaining.

PBKS 19th over (190/3): A perfect penultimate over for Punjab as they are on track to score 200. Asif concedes 54 runs from his four overs as Holder is set to close out the 20.

PBKS 18th over (174/3): Holder was heading for a fantastic over but Dhawan switch-hits the ball for six to get nine from the over. Punjab need a few more of those to end the innings.

PBKS 17th over (165/3): Ashwin produces exactly what Samson was hoping for in the 17th over as he concedes six runs and gets a wicket. Punjab need to take a few more risks now.

WICKET! Ashwin keeps the wickets coming for RR as Raza is bowled out! The carrom ball catches Raza out and the bails go flying.

PBKS 16th over (159/2): Rajasthan Royals will need a few more wickets to stop PBKS from reaching the 200-run mark. Only Dwayne Bravo has more IPL wickets than Chahal now.

WICKET! Chahal gets a bit lucky as his full toss brings the wicket of Jitesh. The batter could not get under the ball enough and Parag takes the catch in the deep.

PBKS 15th over (152/1): Boult finishes with figures of 0/38 from his four overs in an unusually poor display from the fast bowler. Considering this is one of the Royal's home stadiums this season, the bowlers will need to adapt to the wicket sooner rather than later.

PBKS 14th over (140/1): After a steady start, Dhawan reaches his half-century off 36 balls. He is almost caught and bowled by Chahal on the very next ball, but the bowler could not complete the catch.

PBKS 13th over (124/1): RR have slowed Punjab down a bit in terms of run rate compared to how they started, but they will definitely want more wickets heading into the death overs.

PBKS 12th over (113/1): Jitesh Sharma is not waiting around for his captain as he scores back-to-back boundaries against Chahal. Dhawan then responds with a big six off the last ball.

PBKS 11th over (95/1): Ashwin is doing well to slow the run rate down in these middle overs. Dhawan has to get going as he has scored a run-a-ball 29 so far.

INJURY: Rajapaska walks off the field due to an injury. Dhawan fires the ball into the forearm of the Sri Lankan batter and he is unable to continue.

PBKS 10th over (92/1): Rajasthan Royals finally get the breakthrough they were searching for, courtesy of Holder and Buttler. Bhanuka Rajapaksa now joins Dhawan in the middle.

WICKET! Buttler takes an incredible diving catch to get the big wicket of Prabhsimran! The batter top-edges the wide delivery from Holder, and the fielder runs a long way before diving forward to complete the wicket.

PBKS 9th over (86/0): Samson goes back to Boult as RR are desperate for a wicket, but the seamer has conceded 26 runs off his three overs now. Prabhsimran whacks the ball back over the bowler's head as PBKS are in the driving seat.

PBKS 8th over (77/0): Prabhsimran brings up his first IPL half-century off just 28 balls. Dhawan is struggling to get going at the other end, but is happy to let his team-mate take control.

PBKS 7th over (68/0): Ashwin does well to concede no boundaries and slow down the run rate. Yuzvendra Chahal will continue the spin bowling.

PBKS 6th over (63/0): Padikkal drops Prabhsimran on the final delivery of the over as the ball is fired at him by the batter. Jaiswal on the other hand produces a good piece of fielding to stop a four.

PBKS 5th over (56/0): Samson turns to spin and brings in Ashwin , but he is also hit around the park by Prabhsimran. One more to go in the powerplay.

PBKS 4th over (45/0): Prabhsimran continues his aggressive approach as he can sense a big score can be attained in this first innings. He hits three fours and a six to get Sanju Samson thinking about who his next bowler will be.

PBKS 3rd over (26/0): Shikhar Dhawan scores back-to-back boundaries to put some early pressure on Boult and the Royals. It is a good start to the powerplay for the away side.

PBKS 2nd over (16/0): Prabhsimran hits a huge six off the bowling of Asif as the pitch is certainly favouring the batters.

PBKS 1st over (7/0): It is a solid start for Punjab in the first over as they score seven runs against Trent Boult, including a four from Prabhsimran Singh.

30 mins to first ball: The toss is coming up shortly. Four of the seven teams to have won the coin flip so far this season have gone to lose the game. RR win the toss and chose to bowl first.

1 hour to first ball: PBKS won by a slim margin of seven runs via DLS method in their opening game against the Kolkata Knight Riders. They will be hoping for a better all-round performance this time.

90 mins to first ball: It is no surprise that the Royals have chosen this venue as one their home stadiums, as the pitch will favour batters like Jos Buttler.

2 hours to first ball: Hello and welcome to the Sporting News' live coverage of Rajasthan Royals vs. Punjab Kings in the IPL. It is the eighth match of the season as both teams look to continue their winning start.

Rajasthan Royals vs Punjab Kings lineups

Jos Buttler (54) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (54) were typically destructive at the top of the order for the Royals against Sunrisers, with Sanju Samson (55) proving the perfect anchor at three.

The all-round talents of Jason Holder and paceman Trent Boult should also be invaluable in a star-studded line-up.

Arshdeep Singh took 3/19 as the Kings defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders first up and he may be the key weapon against the exciting Royals batting line-up.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa made a swift fifty, while Sam Curran (26 off 17) and Shikhar Dhawan (40 off 29) also impressed.
