One of the most intriguing questions around the World Cup, apart from the eventual winners, is of who will be the leading run-scorer. With the World Cup taking place in a round-robin format, batters will have the opportunity to play against all the other teams and rack up the runs.

But finally who will score the most runs this year?

"If I were to pick one, I think Rohit Sharma": Virender Sehwag

Former India opener Virender Sehwag made his pick for leading run-scorer in an interview with the International Cricket Council (ICC). He said,

"If I were to pick one [leading run-scorer], Rohit Sharma. There are a couple of names, but you know I'm Indian and I should pick Indian. So Rohit Sharma, because when the World Cup comes, his energy level, his performance goes up."

"This time he's the captain also, so I'm sure he will make the difference and score a lot of runs."

Sehwag also said that he felt in general that an opener would be the leading run-scorer, as they get the most time in the middle. This was in contrast to Jacques Kallis' choice of Jos Buttler, England's middle order batter, for leading run-scorer.

Who was the leading run-scorer in 2019 World Cup?

In the last World Cup in England, Rohit Sharma did finish as the top run-getter, with 648 runs in 9 innings. This was the third-highest tally for a single World Cup campaign by any batter, after Sachin Tendulkar' 673 in 2003 and Matthew Hayden's 659 in 2007.

David Warner finished second in 2019, just one run behind Rohit, with 647 runs.
