Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli or Lionel Messi? Which captain does Shubman Gill look up to and why? image

Shubman Gill was recently handed the captaincy by Gujarat Titans after Hardik Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians.

On the deadline day, GT had initially named their then-skipper Hardik Pandya in their list of retained players. But as the day progressed it became clear that Mumbai Indians would re-sign the all-rounder in a direct cash transaction with GT.

A day later, MI officially announced that Pandya had returned to his former franchisee and in return, the Mumbai franchise paid INR 15 crores to GT in a trade deal.

GT are now set for a new era under the leadership of the 'Prince of Indian Cricket'. He has had the opportunity to play under some of the iconic leaders including Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

And ahead of leading the Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Gill will look to take a couple of leaves out from the books of his senior colleagues, especially Rohit who boasts of having a stellar record in the franchise cricket tournament.

What did Shubman Gill say about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's leadership?

Speaking to Gujarat Titans, Gill said: "When I played under Virat bhai, he was someone who used to lead from the front. He was the first person to show the way and lead the way.

"Whereas, Rohit bhai is someone who gives freedom to all young players and tells them to play the game, how you want to play."

Shubman Gill hails 'Messi Magic' as his inspiration

Gill has always claimed that he has been a massive fan of Argentine skipper Lionel Messi. And it is no surprise that he will be looking up to the 2022 World Cup winner to seek inspiration when he walks onto the pitch as a leader for the Titans.

"Messi, you know, he is someone who is always creating magic on field and he is always someone who is looking for that tiny opportunity where he can give his team, the opportunity to be ahead of the opposition. It is all about having one common goal, which is winning. If you are all inclined and attached towards that one goal, then results are going to come your way," he said.

Gill had earlier picked Messi over his eternal rival Cristiano Ronaldo and his wish was fulfilled as the Inter Miami forward guided the Albicelseste to their third global crown in Qatar 2022.

“Between Messi and Ronaldo, I admire Messi for his passion and the physical disorder he had to overcome to get there. It's ashtonishing to see the kind of career he has had despite his physique," he had said.

After Argentina won the World Cup he allegedly took a dig at Ronaldo as he wrote on X: "The GREATEST of all time Leo Messi. SIIIIIIUUUUUUU."
