As India failed to win another ICC trophy, after getting eaten by Australia in the final of the ODI World Cup 2023 by six wickets, a paradigm shift in Indian cricket could be in the offing.

The loss also has cast doubts on the future of certain players with one of them being captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Rohit led India well in the tournament and even performed brilliantly with the bat, finishing as the second-highest run-scorer, while Kohli led the charts amassing more than 750 runs.

But both the players have been rested for the T20I series against Australia and there have been reports that Sharma has been thinking long and hard about his future in white-ball cricket.

When did Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli last play T20I for India?

Rohit and Virat last played a T20I for India back in the 2022 T20 World Cup when the men in Blue went down to England in the knockout stage at the Adelaide Oval. While the Mumbai Indians captain scored 27 of 28 balls, Kohli registered a half-century in that match in 40 balls.

BCCI to discuss with Rohit Sharma his white-ball cricket future

The Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) has arranged a meeting with Rohit with the agenda being his white-ball cricket future.

As reported by The Times of India, Rohit along with the chief selector Ajit Agarkar will join the meeting. While his ODI future hangs in balance, he, reportedly, has already informed about his intentions on T20Is, being fine with non-selection after the last year's World Cup.

Will Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli come back for the 2024 T20 World Cup?

The two batsmen are among the best in the business. Gautam Gambhir thinks that they should be part of the squad flying to the West Indies and the USA later in 2024.

“Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should play in the ICC T20 World 2024. Don’t give captaincy to Hardik Pandya and play Rohit as a batter. Sharma is a very good leader. You need experience in the batting unit,” Gautam Gambhir said on Sportskeeda.

Before the T20 showpiece event, both players will be plying their trade in the IPL with their respective teams and the performance in the tournament could be key to their inclusion in the squad.
