Rohit Sharma hits a pull

Rohit Sharma is currently experiencing a big slump in form in Test cricket after having a phenomenal 2023, especially in ODIs.

The Indian captain has failed to hit a half-century in the ongoing Test series against England, with his streak of going without a half-century in Tests stretching back to eight innings.

Since the tour of South Africa, Rohit has scored just 150 runs in four Tests (8 innings). During this phase, his highest score has been 39, which he achieved twice.

With three more Tests to go, the 37-year-old will be keen to return to his destructive best.

Former Indian bowler RP Singh believes that Rohit is currently playing uncharacteristically, which has played a big role in the player going through a lean patch.

What did RP Singh say about Rohit Sharma?

Speaking on Cricbuzz, in a conversation with presenter Manish Batavia, RP Singh opined that Rohit needed to bat with more freedom.

Batavia asked RP, "Rohit Sharma is unable to score runs. Will the 10-day break benefit him? He'll be able to look at his game, his batting calmly and work on it. Because there's no lack of skill, he's a big proven player. What's wrong with him? Is he overthinking because India are missing a few senior batsmen?"

Here's what RP said:

It's a bit of both, Manish. One is that he is thinking a lot about having to build a big innings so that he can stitch 2-3 partnerships with the other batsmen and take the innings ahead.

Secondly, he's too overcautious. He's batting with a lot of precaution. That's not Rohit's style, his style is a bit different. We aren't getting to see that free-flowing batting because he batted well in the WTC Final, changed the entire game. Rohit shouldn't be changing his game. He can play a few more big shots but he is batting contrary to his style. An overcautious Rohit, neither the batsman nor the personality, is not fine. He should stop being overcautious and bat freely.

What next for Rohit Sharma?

The Indian skipper will hope to be back among the runs when India take on England in the third Test of the ongoing Test series in Rajkot on February 15.
