What is the format of the Ranji Trophy?

The Ranji Trophy will feature an Elite division and a Plate division. The Elite division consists of four groups, each comprising eight teams, while the Plate division consists of a single group with six teams.

Teams in the Elite division have the opportunity to engage in up to 10 matches. This includes seven league games, followed by the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final.

In the Elite division, the top two teams from each of the four groups secure direct entry into the quarterfinals. The matchups for the quarterfinals are determined as follows: A1 vs. C2, B1 vs. D2, C1 vs. A2, and D1 vs. B2. On the other hand, in the Plate division, the top four teams will compete in the semifinals using the traditional format of No. 1 vs. No. 4 and No. 2 vs. No. 3.

It's worth noting that the teams that reach the final in the Plate division will earn promotion to the Elite Group for the subsequent 2024-25 season. Conversely, the bottom two teams from all the combined Elite groups (A/B/C/D & E), determined by factors such as points, bonus points, wins, and quotient, will face relegation to the Plate Group.

How were teams divided into Elite and Plate groups?

BCCI divided the Elite and Plate groups according to the following parameters:

- Points Table from the 2022-23 season were taken into account.

- All Elite teams were ranked based on their performance: winners, runners-up, semifinal losers 1 & 2, quarterfinal losers 1, 2, 3, and 4, using points, bonus points, number of wins, and quotient.

- The remaining teams were grouped and ranked based on points, bonus points, wins, and quotient until the league stage.

- The bottom two teams from all Elite Groups (A/B/C/D) combined, based on points, bonus points, wins, and quotient, were relegated to the Plate Group.

- The winners and runners-up from the Plate Group were promoted to Elite Group A and B, respectively.
