BCCI

The Ranji Trophy stands as the pinnacle of India's domestic cricket, serving as a platform for budding talent and seasoned veterans to showcase their skills.

Named after the illustrious Colonel H. H. Shri Sir Ranjitsinhji Vibhaji II, Jam Saheb of Nawanagar, the tournament holds a prestigious position in the country's cricketing landscape.

Colonel Ranjitsinhji's legacy as the first Indian cricketer to play international cricket serves as the inspiration behind the tournament's name, honouring his contributions to the sport.

Established in the 1934-35 season, the Ranji Trophy's maiden edition witnessed Mumbai (formerly Bombay) emerging as the inaugural champions, setting the stage for decades of cricketing excellence.

How many times have Mumbai won the Ranji Trophy?

Historically, Mumbai has been synonymous with Ranji Trophy success, boasting a staggering 42 titles, a feat unmatched by any other team in the competition's history. With a record 47 appearances in the final, Mumbai's dominance during the 1950s to the early 1970s remains unparalleled, clinching the trophy 18 times out of 20 seasons.

In the 2021/22 Ranji Trophy season, Mumbai came tantalizingly close to securing their 42nd title, only to falter at the final hurdle against Madhya Pradesh. They finally managed to win their first title in eight years, as they defeated Vidarbha by 169 runs in the 2023/24 final.
