"We're hurting right now" - Pat Cummins speaks as Australia lose fourth consecutive ODI World Cup match image

Australia have had a nervous start to the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. The Men from Down Under have lost their opening two encounters in the 2023 World Cup. After facing a dreadful loss against hosts India in their opener, Australia were schooled by South Africa in Lucknow on Thursday.

Having been asked to bat first, the Proteas recorded a total of 311 runs at the end of their innings. Quinton de Kock (109) scored a magnificent century and guided his team to a respectable total.

In response, the Aussie batting lineup completely collapsed. Australia were bundled out for 177 in under 40 overs. Marnus Labuschagne (46), Mitchell Starc (27), and Pat Cummins (22) were the only batsmen to have crossed the 20-run mark.

How many consecutive losses have Australia faced at World Cups?

With the loss against South Africa, Australia have registered themselves into an unwanted list of records. The five-time world champions have now lost their last four matches at the ICC ODI World Cup. This is the first time that the Aussies have gone winless in four World Cup matches.

In the 2019 ODI World Cup, Australia lost to South Africa in their final game of the league stage. The Aussies then went on to lose to hosts England in the semi-final match of the event.

At the 2023 World Cup, Pat Cummins & Co. have lost their opening two encounters against India and South Africa. To keep things alive for the latter stages of the event, Aussies will have to make amends soon, and not read deep into records and statistics.

What did Pat Cummins say after the defeat to South Africa?

The Australian Captain was agitated with the loss and admitted that the Aussie camp was hurt by the results at the ongoing World Cup.

The skipper admitted that the team will have to adapt to conditions to stand a chance of competing at the highest levels.

Cummins said at the post-match presentation,

If we want to be challenging for this tournament you've got to adapt to all conditions. Not much needs to be said tonight, everyone's hurting. Got a few days until the next one here, so we'll try to make amends. A few things to tidy up.

Who will win the Cricket World Cup 2023?

India, England and Australia are among the favourites to win the World Cup. Pakistan and New Zealand are tied on odds for the spot of the fourth team in the top four, while South Africa too stand a decent chance of making the semis.
