Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi issued a warning of an overhaul of the team following their six-run loss against arch-rivals India at the T20 World Cup 2024 in New York.

The Babar Azam led Pakistan team has suffered back-to-back defeats in the ongoing tournament co-hosted by USA and West Indies, leaving the team in serious danger of exiting in the group stages and not qualifying for the Super Eights.

The PCB have had four different chairpersons since the 2022 T20 World Cup and even experimented with different captains including Shaheen Afridi for a single series, only to abandon those plans before the current tournament and reappointed Babar Azam as the captain.

What did PCB chairman warn about after Pakistan's World Cup 2024 loss against India?

After the T20 World Cup match against India, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi warned of an overhaul:

"We are very disappointed with the defeat against India. We thought a small surgery would help but time has come for a bigger surgery of Pakistan cricket team. I'm very well aware what is happening in Pakistan cricket team and what are the reasons behind poor performance," he was quoted saying by Pakistan media.

The cricketing world was left stunned by Pakistan's loss against co-hosts United States of America (USA) in the Super Over. Skipper Babar Azam had come under intense scrutiny for his captaincy and for batting with a low strike rate, at top of the order.

Naqvi further said that they had made small changes ahead of the tournament which might have included bringing back the Babar-Rizwan opening combination and bringing back Mohammad Amir to the national team.

However, he warned the Pakistan players that a complete overhaul was imminent after the World Cup campaign, especially after the loss against neighbours Indian which he called a huge disappointment.

What next for Pakistan team led by Babar Azam in the T20 World Cup 2024?

The Pakistan team are winless and have now suffered back-to-back defeats against USA and India, in this T20 World Cup 2024 so far. This puts them in a very difficult spot to qualify from the group, for the Super Eight.

Following the India match, skipper Babar Azam was asked about how the team looked forward to their upcoming games in Group A and in the tournament. "Obviously we have to win the last two matches," he replied. "We will sit and discuss our mistakes, but we are looking forward to the next two matches."

Pakistan will next play Canada at the same venue in New York, on June 11 and then against Ireland at Lauderhill, Florida, on June 16, for their final game of the group stage.
