New Zealand's long-standing skipper Kane Williamson has announced his resignation from the captaincy role. Williamson has been the face of New Zealand  Cricket and has led the side to multiple ICC Finals, besides winning the inaugural World Test Championship in 2021.

However, the T20 World Cup 2024 was the nadir of the captaincy career of Kane Williamson. The Blackcaps failed to even get past the group stages in the tournament, and Williamson denied the central contract offered by NZ Cricket.

With the 33-year-old leaving the helm, New Zealand will now be in search of a full-time captain in T20I Cricket. Here is a list of possible candidates who could be in the running for the position.

Three players who could take over as New Zealand captain from Kane Williamson in T20I cricket

Michael Bracewell

Michael Bracewell could be one of the surprise choices in consideration, as Kiwis line up a Kane Williamson replacement. Bracewell led NZ against Pakistan in the bilateral series just before the World Cup. Having had the opportunity to lead before, he could be handed the full-time role.

Even though Bracewell has limited international experience, the 33-year-old has played for various T20 leagues around the world. Being an all-rounder, he can maximise his own contribution to the team, and lead the side as an example.

Devon Conway

Devon Conway could be one to replace Kane Williamson. Conway has been New Zealand's most consistent performer across all formats. Having played over 100 games for the country, the batter knows the ins and outs of the team and can lead the country well.

Replacing Williamson is no small feat, and Conway has shown with his batting performances, that he can take the responsibilities. The 32-year-old could be one to watch out for, as New Zealand step up their search for a leader in T20 Cricket.

Rachin Ravindra

Rachin Ravindra could be another option, should New Zealand decide to take a different perspective. Being just 24, Ravindra can be a long-term pick for the management. His exploits since the 2023 ODI World Cup have been for everyone to see, and the Indian-origin batter could well be Williamson's successor for New Zealand.

The lack of experience at the international level makes him the least favourite to take over, but surely one to keep your eyes on for the future.
