Azhar Mahmood was the latest former player to be given the role of the head coach of Pakistan Cricket Team. After the sacking of Mohammad Hafeez, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have turned their heads to another ex-player, in Azhar Mahmood. 

Mahmood was announced as the Pakistan head coach ahead of their bilateral T20I series against New Zealand. The five-match series would prove to be the perfect practice tournament ahead of the upcoming T20I World Cup. 

Talking about Pakistan's chances at the World Cup, the newly-appointed head coach threw warning signs at their opponents.

What did Azhar Mahmood say about Pakistan's chances at T20 World Cup?

Azhar Mahmood spoke to reporters ahead of Pakistan's bilateral T20I series against New Zealand. The series kicks off on April 18, as Mahmood spoke about Pakistan's chances at the upcoming T20I World Cup. 

At the pre-match press conference, Mahmood said,

We know we have not won a big tournament since 2009 (the Men's T20 World Cup) or the Champions Trophy (2017). But you can never write off the Pakistan team, especially in the T20 format, Mahmood stated.

The coach also spoke about the areas where the team needs improvement ahead of the NZ series.

He continued,

We have the depth and strength, but there are always areas for improvement. So till the World Cup, we would like to develop a structure and game plan, to give role clarity to players.

What did Mahmood say about the return of Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir?

Azhar Mahmood also spoke about the talent at his disposal. He expressed ecstasy over the return of formerly retired cricketers, Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir.

The duo had an impressive PSL 2024 campaign and were called up by the PCB, on merit for the T20I series against the Kiwis.

We have two all-rounders, and our fast bowling department is also very strong. The return of (Mohammad) Amir and Imad (Wasim) also gives us an edge, because we can use them at any given time, Mahmood stated in his interview.
