Mumbai has reclaimed their Irani Cup glory, winning their 15th title after a long wait of 27 years. This historic win came in the 62nd edition of the prestigious tournament, where Mumbai defeated the Rest of India (RoI) at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
Mumbai is renowned for being the most successful Ranji Trophy team. Despite their good form in domestic cricket, this is their first Irani Cup title since the 1997-98 season.

The Irani Cup, a celebrated red-ball match between the Ranji Trophy winners and a RoI team, was first played in 1959-60 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Ranji Trophy. RoI holds the record for most wins with 30 wins across 62 appearances.
What happened in the 2024/25 Irani Cup match?
In the 2024 edition, Mumbai scored 537 runs batting first and in reply, Rest Of India (RoI) managed to score 416 runs, providing the former with an advantage and lead of 121 runs in the first innings.
Mumbai scored 329/8 and declared their innings on the final day as the match ended in a draw, which led them to becoming the winners. This is because of a rule in Irani Cup, which states in case the match ends in a draw, the team which had a first innings lead will win the trophy.
