Mumbai Indians are five-time winners of the Indian Premier League and are the most successful side in the competition's history, just ahead of the Chennai Super Kings.

Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, Mumbai have consistently delivered on the talent that's always been in their squad. Unlike perennial under-performers Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sharma gets his players to achieve the maximum results possible.

So, can they go again in IPL 2023 and win their first title since going back-to-back in 2019 and 2020?

Here's a look at their squad and its strengths and weaknesses.

Mumbai Indians stars, strengths & weaknesses

Stars

You cannot look past the batting strength, starting with Rohit Sharma, who these days is an adaptable T20 batter but does his best work in the powerplay overs. Then there's Suryakumar Yadav, who can operate up and down the order but has made his name as one of T20 cricket's best and most innovative 'finishers'.

Mumbai Indians paid big bucks for Cameroon Green who is growing into one of the world's most sought-after white-ball stars for his ability with bat and ball. He might have his own personal rivalry with Punjab Kings and England all-rounder Sam Curran, with the duo having fetched the biggest fees at the last draft. It will be fascinating to see how Jofra Archer fares on his return to the IPL, too.

Then there are the unheralded stars of this Mumbai Indians squad: the likes of wily leg-spinner Piyush Chawla and canny Aussie left-arm quick Jason Behrendorff.

Strengths

The batting depth is frankly ridiculous, to the point where one or maybe even both of Tristan Stubbs and Dewald Brevis, the two young South African hitting sensations, may have to be left on the bench.

The pace bowling unit is also very strong, even in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who is yet to fully recover from a long-standing back injury. Archer needs to be fit and firing, but if he is then the England quick Mumbai Indians have arguably the best quick bowler in world T20 cricket.

Weaknesses

There's potentially a concern about the spin department, with Chawla now in his twilight years and very little to back him up in the squad. If Archer breaks down with injury again, given Bumrah's absence, the quick bowling might suffer too.
