Bangladesh's cricket icon Tamim Iqbal believes that newly appointed India head coach Gautam Gambhir will be forced to reveal his true character once the Indian team faces setbacks on the field.
The former India opener who had recently taken charge of the national team got off to a winning start in Test cricket as India beat Bangladesh in the first Test.
However, according to Tamim, the true test for Gambhir’s leadership will be visible only when India confronts tough challenges in upcoming tours.

How has Gautam Gambhir fared as India head coach so far?
Gautam Gambhir stepped into the role of India’s head coach in July and was immediately thrust into action with a limited-overs assignment against Sri Lanka.
His tenure began on a high note as India clinched the three-match T20I series in emphatic fashion with a 3-0 whitewash. However, the Men in Blue stumbled in the ODI leg of the series, losing 0-2, which raised a few eyebrows.
Nevertheless, India bounced back strongly in the Test format, displaying dominance in a commanding win in Chennai.

What did Tamim Iqbal say about Gautam Gambhir’s character?
During a recent pre-match show on JioCinema, Tamim Iqbal did not hold back while sharing his thoughts on Gambhir’s future as India’s head coach.
"It’s easy to judge someone when they’re winning, but true character comes out when a team hits a rough patch. So far, India has done well, but if they lose a few games or a series, then we will get to see Gambhir’s true colors," said the former Bangladesh captain.
What lies ahead for India under Gambhir?
Despite his promising start, Gambhir’s coaching journey is set to get tougher. India currently leads the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 table, but a stern home series against New Zealand awaits.

After that, the focus will shift to the challenging Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia. Along with these tours, Gambhir will also have to navigate high-stakes ICC events like the 2025 Champions Trophy, the 2026 T20 World Cup, and the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The WTC final is another critical hurdle, with India aiming to finally lift the Test mace after two unsuccessful attempts.
