Will KL Rahul take up wicket-keeping duties in Tests against South Africa? Indian star eyes middle-order spot in all formats image

KL Rahul is embarking on a transformative journey in South Africa, where he will be leading the Indian team in three ODIs and featuring in two Tests.

This trip marks a significant shift in his career as he embraces the role of a wicketkeeper-batsman in all formats of the game.

According to Cricbuzz, Rahul is expected not only to don the gloves in ODIs but also to take up wicketkeeping duties in Test matches. Despite Ishan Kishan's presence in the squad, insider information suggests the Indian think tank prefers Rahul with the gloves in both formats.

In the upcoming months, Rahul's performance as a middle-order batsman will be closely monitored, especially in the Tests against South Africa and England and the IPL. Although he opened in the last Test against Australia in New Delhi, he now aims to establish himself as a wicketkeeper-middle-order batsman.

Recognizing the strategic importance of the middle order, Rahul is working on enhancing his strike rate to adapt to this new role across formats. Even for the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, where he traditionally opened, Rahul is anticipated to play in the middle order.

"He wants to evolve himself as a middle-order batsman across formats and establish himself there." said a source to Cricbuzz.

Despite having opened in 44 Tests, 23 ODIs, and 55 T20Is, Rahul is reportedly committed to this transition. His decision is influenced by recent success in the ODI format, notably in the Asia Cup and the latest World Cup. During these tournaments, Rahul showcased impressive form, amassing 452 runs in 10 games with an average exceeding 75.

This potential move comes in light of the presence of recognized openers such as Quinton de Kock, Kyle Mayers, and the recent acquisition of Devdutt Padikkal in the Lucknow Super Giants squad. Discussions are underway regarding this strategic adjustment to optimize the team's batting lineup.

What next for KL Rahul?

Rahul will be in action with the Indian team on December 17 in the first ODI against South Africa.
