Royal Challengers Bangalore capitulated at Eden Gardens as Kolkata Knight Riders won by 81 runs to pick up their first win of the 2023 Indian Premier League.

Shardul Thakur scored 68 off 29 balls before spinners Varun Chakravarthy, Suyash Sharma, and Sunil Narine combined for nine wickets.

RCB were off to a great start as David Willey took two wickets in the powerplay and went on to finish with figures of 2/16 from his four overs. Karn Sharma also took two wickets in as many balls to reduce KKR to 89/5, with opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz scoring 57 of those runs.

The tables then turned as Rinku Singh and Thakur put on a partnership of 103 to put RCB on the back foot. Mohammed Siraj, Harshal Patel, Akash Deep, and Doug Bracewell all conceded over 30 runs in the innings as KKR set a target of 205 to win.

Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis both got to 20 runs before the capitulation started. Narine and Chakravarthy took five wickets in the space of five overs before debutant Suyash ripped through the RCB middle order. The youngster finished on three wickets while Thakur was the only seamer to contribute to the wicket column.

RCB will need to reflect on a loss that sums up the history of the franchise. They drop to seventh in the points table due to a huge drop in net run rate.

KKR move up to fourth as new skipper Nitish Rana will hope to start a winning run after this result.

KKR vs RCB final score , updates from the 2023 IPL at Eden Gardens

KKR WIN! Deep is caught and bowled by Chakaravarthy as KKR win by 81 runs against RCB. It is exactly what the Knight Riders needed to kickstart their campaign while RCB have some thinking to do.

RCB 17th over (121/9): Willey and Deep are doing their best to get RCB through the 20 overs in order to help their net run rate in this loss. Suyash's last over goes for 12 as he finishes with figures of 3/30 on debut.

RCB 16th over (109/9): Deep gets a big inside edge on the ball to take it through the legs of Gurbaz behind the stumps. Narine ends with figures of 2/16 from his four overs.

RCB 15th over (102/9): This is the same old story for RCB in the IPL. Too much inconsistency and an inability to produce big moments when it matters. KKR need one more wicket to secure the win.

WICKET! Suyash gets his third wicket of the game after the review confirms Karn Sharma edges the ball onto his pads and into the hands of Rana. Could this be the start of a special IPL career for Suyash?

RCB 14th over (95/8): Willey scores a boundary against Thakur with a well-timed shot. KKR are very calm now, knowing they are closing in on the win. Suyash to continue his spell.

RCB 13th over (86/8): This is a dream scenerio for KKR captain Nitish Rana. The two wickets by Suyash all but confirms a big win for the hosts.

WICKET! It is another scalp for Suyash as he sends Karthik back to the locker room! The veteran goes on the front foot but does not connect cleanly with the ball. Chakaravarthy takes the catch.

WICKET! Suyash gets his first IPL wicket as he removes impact substitute Rawat! The batter mistimes his sweep shot and Narine takes the catch to complete the wicket.

RCB 12th over (84/6): The away side make a substitution as Anuj Rawat comes into bat in place of Siraj. Thakur has done his job perfectly as the wickets keep tumbling for RCB.

WICKET! Thakur now gets in on the action as he dismisses Bracewell for 19! He bangs in the short ball, making the batter edge his shot to Nitish Rana.

RCB 11th over (78/5): Suyash Sharma comes in for his first over but gets hit for a six on the leg side by Bracewell. RCB have to get going sooner rather than later.

RCB 10th over (69/5): KKR are getting through their overs quickly as they want to keep the pressure on the RCB batters. Bracewell gets his first boundary of the game with a good cut shot off Chakaravarthy.

RCB 9th over (61/5): Dinesh Karthik and Bracewell have a big job on their hands. The KKR spin duo of Chakaravarthy and Narine have taken five wickets in as many overs.

WICKET! Narine gets his second wicket as Shahbaz is caught in the deep by Thakur! He tries a switch-hit but picks out the only fielder on the boundary rope. Nightmare scenes for RCB.

RCB 8th over (54/4): The spinners are doing the trick for KKR as Chakaravarthy has three wickets from his two overs. Not many saw this start coming from the Royal Challengers.

WICKET! Chakaravarthy is having a great time as he bowls Patel out! The googly forces an inside edge from the batter as RCB are crumbling.

WICKET! Now Maxwell is bowled out by Chakaravarthy as KKR want to push on for a big win here.

RCB 7th over (53/2): A great over from Narine as he concedes just three from it. RCB do not need to panic here. This partnership between Maxwell and Bracewell could be vital.

RCB 6th over (50/2): Chakaravarthy almost dismisses Maxwell in the over too, but the batter survives by the skin of his teeth. KKR will be happy after the powerplay.

WICKET! Du Plessis now heads back to the dugout as Varun Chakaravarthy gets him out! The RCB captain gets an inside edge on the ball and drags it onto the stumps.

RCB 5th over (45/1): Narine does well to break up the partnership and give KKR some control going into the final over of the powerplay. Bracewell is out in the middle with Du Plessis.

WICKET! Spin gets the breakthrough for KKR as Sunil Narine bowls Kohli out! The batter completely misreads the line of the delivery and the bails go flying!

RCB 4th over (42/0): The visitors do not want the required run rate to get away from them as they go aggressive against Southee in the fourth over. They got 23 runs from it, with Du Plessis scoring 16 of those.

RCB 3rd over (19/0): Du Plessis gets his first boundary of the game as both batters look to target Yadav early on in this innings. KKR are fielding well.

RCB 2nd over  (12/0): Tim Southee is getting a lot of swing on the ball, making it difficult for Kohli and Du Plessis to play their shots. He concedes just two off the over.

RCB 1st over (10/0): Virat Kohli scores a boundary on the first and last ball of the over as he uses the pace of Umesh Yadav to guide the ball to the rope.

KKR 20th over (204/7): For the second game in a row, RCB have let themselves down with the ball. KKR set a target of 205 to win thanks to an explosive display from Shardul Thakur.

WICKET! Maxwell takes an easy catch to send Thakur back to the changing rooms with two balls to go. He departs with 68 runs off 28 balls as Siraj gets his first wicket.

KKR 19th over (192/6): The bowling in the second half of the innings from RCB has been shambolic to say the least. Siraj has a big job to do in the final over.

WICKET! Rinku departs on the final ball of Patel's spell but will not be disappointed as he knew he had to attack. He gloves the ball to Karthik, finishing on 46 from 33 balls.

KKR 18th over (175/5): This is going from bad to worse for RCB now. Siraj gives 15 away runs in the 18th over, including a no-ball six from Rinku. This is not what Du Plessis wanted after the start they had.

KKR 17th over (160/5): Thakur brings his 50 up off just 20 deliveries as he looks to see this innings through for KKR. Rinku Singh has complimented him well at the other end as Patel concedes 13 off the over.

KKR 16th over (147/5): Willey has been excellent with the ball and ends with figures of 2/16 from his four overs. Siraj and Patel will probably close the innings out for RCB as a strategic timeout is taken.

KKR 15th over (140/5): The 50-run partnership comes off just 21 balls as Thakur hits two huge sixes against Bracewell. KKR are gaining a lot of momentum as the death overs approach.

KKR 14th over (124/5): Rinku is doing well to find singles and doubles while Thakur is playing some very aggressive strokes. This partnership is balancing the innings out now.

KKR 13th over (113/5): Thakur scores back-to-back boundaries to start the 13th over before ending with a six to put pressure on Deep heading into the latter stages of the innings. Du Plessis will a strong finish with the ball.

KKR 12th over (94/5): Karn Sharma almost gets his hat-trick after Shardul Thakur edges his first ball towards the stumps, but it goes away to the boundary rope. Faf Du Plessis will be very happy with his team right now.

WICKET! Now Sharma is on a hat-trick and the RCB players are delighted as Andre Russell is out on his first ball! Kolhi takes a simple catch in the deep as the visitors are enjoying this game so far.

WICKET! Gurbaz will be very annoyed with himself as he reverse sweeps the ball straight into the hands of Deep! Huge blow for KKR as Sharma gets his first wicket of the match.

KKR 11th over (87/3): Harshal Patel was heading for a good first over but concedes a boundary off his last ball. Rinku Singh needs to build off that four and help Gurbaz build a strong partnership.

KKR 10th over (79/3): A six off Karn Sharma's second delivery brings up Gurbaz's half-century. He taking this innings by the scruff off the neck despite the wickets at the other end.

KKR 9th over (71/3): Gurbaz is taking initiative for KKR now as he attacks Bracewell's second over, scoring two boundaries. The first strategic timeout is taken.

KKR 8th over (57/3): Shahbaz Ahmed thought he picked up the big wicket of Gurbaz for LBW, but a review showed the ball hit the batter's gloves and not his pads. RCB are still bowling well.

KKR 7th over (51/3): It is a successful first over of spin from Bracewell as RCB are taking wickets at key points in the match. Gurbaz will be the one they want now.

WICKET! Doug Bracewell gets the wicket of KKR captain Nitish Rana with his first delivery! The batter gloves the ball and Karthik completes the catch behind the stumps.

KKR 6th over (47/2): Willey concedes just nine runs from his three overs in the powerplay. He has done a brilliant job and given his team-mates a good platform to build on.

KKR 5th over (41/2): Gurbaz takes some of the pressure off his side as Akash Deep's first over goes for 11 runs, not including four leg byes. One more to go in the powerplay.

KKR 4th over (26/2): The Knight Riders batters have struggled against left-arm seamers over the last few seasons and Willey makes the most of it. He bowls a double-wicket maiden for RCB.

WICKET! BOWLED AGAIN! Willey is on fire and now on a hat-trick! He swings the ball away from Mandeep Singh but still manages to hit off-stump.

WICKET! Willey strikes in the powerplay as he bowls out Venkatesh Iyer! The batter misjudges the line of the ball and Willey hits middle stump.

KKR 3rd over (26/0): Gurbaz is starting to find his feet as he scores two boundaries in three balls. Siraj is almost getting too much swing as Dinesh Karthik is struggling with the gloves.

KKR 2nd over (12/0): David Willey concedes just three runs as the RCB fielders are doing well to cut off the runs in the powerplay.

KKR 1st over (9/0): The hosts are off to a good start thanks to a boundary from Gurbaz and five wides from Mohammed Siraj.

30 mins until first ball: RCB win the toss and choose to field first. It is usually a pitch that favours batting, but spinners will get more joy as the game progresses.

60 mins until first ball: RCB made a big statement in their opening game as they continue their search for their first IPL title. Another comfortable victory could really make the top contenders worry.
