Former England skipper and Test specialist, Joe Root makes an unapologetic return to the T20 format. Root, who has focussed his cricketing career largely on the red-ball game, is set to feature in South Africa's franchise T20 league.

Being in red-hot form in the red-ball format, Joe Root is also set to make a return to limited-overs cricket. Root most recently scored a century in England's second Test match against West Indies at Trent Bridge. 

Having vast experience as a cricketer, Root's gigs in the T20 format have been limited. His last T20I appearance for England came in 2019. Root will feature in the SA20 league, come January 2025.

Which T20 franchise will Joe Root play for?

Joe Root is set to be a part of Paarl Royals for the third edition of the SA20 league. Paarl Royals is owned by the IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals, whom Joe Root was a part of, in IPL 2023. Root made his IPL debut through RR, and appeared thrice for the inaugural champions, in 2023. 

Stretching his commitment towards the franchise beyond borders, Root has agreed to feature for RR's sister concern, Paarl Royals in South Africa's franchise T20 league. Royals' Director of Cricket, Kumar Sangakkara spoke highly of the Englishman, as he welcomed Root with open arms, once again.

What did Kumar Sangakkara say about Joe Root playing for Paarl Royals?

Sangakkara expressed his joy in welcoming Joe Root into the Royals' roster. The 33-year-old will be a part of the franchise, but this time for the SA20 league. Sanga called Root a phenomenal player and lauded him for his all-round abilities in the game. 

He also spoke about how Root is a valuable asset to the team, both on and off the field. Root's expertise, according to Sangakkara, would help the team achieve its objectives in the third season of the SA20 league. 

We all know what a phenomenal player Joe Root is, and to have him back at the Royals is a great feeling, Sangakkara, said on Joe Root's announcement as a Paarl Royals player.

He (Root) has been a great contributor to all the teams he has represented over the years and has also proven to be a valuable all-rounder with his bowling and fielding attributes. He is also a great team man and has the ability to help his teammates develop both on and off the field, RR's Director of Cricket added.

We are looking forward to using his expertise, his personality, his brains, and also his performances on the field to strive towards a successful SA20 season in 2025,” former Sri Lankan skipper added.
