The International Cricket Council (ICC) will be holding its Annual conference from July 19-22 in Colombo, four months away from the elections to determine the new ICC chairman.

India not traveling to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy is not on the official ICC Board's agenda. It will only be discussed if the chair permits it under "Any Other Business".

The current chairman of the ICC is New Zealand’s Greg Barclay who has held the post for four years now, becoming the head in 2018 after the support from the secretary of the BCCI, Jay Shah. With the elections coming up in a few months, Shah could be an interesting choice to become the new chairman of the council.

Will Jay Shah become the new ICC chairman?

So far, Shah hasn’t shown any kind of interest in taking over as the new chairman following Barclay despite being the most favoured candidate. Barclay is still eligible to remain in position for another term, but if Shah decides to stand for the elections he will most certainly be appointed as the new chairman, according to Cricbuzz.

There have also been rumours of Shah moving the headquarters of the ICC from Dubai to Mumbai once he becomes the head of the body.

The international media has also reported that Shah will be looking forward to making extensive changes within the organization after the poor handling of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, which was held in the USA and West Indies.

Many of the pitches in the USA were criticized for their sub-par standard, not an ideal situation for hosting such a high-profile tournament.

Once Shah becomes the chairman of the ICC, he will be eligible to become the BCCI president once his term ends in 2028.

"It is not about how but when, as he still has one year left as BCCI secretary before his cooling-off period in Indian board starts in 2025 as per constitution. However, if he has to take over in 2025, then Barclay can't complete his third term of two years from December 2024 to December 2026." An ICC source said.

"There is a school of thought that what if ICC's chairmanship term changes from three terms of two years each to two terms of three years, so the cumulative term can remain six years." The source further added.

If this change happens, Barclay's current term would be extended to three years. This would allow Shah to complete his six-year term as BCCI secretary and then take over as ICC chairman for three years in 2025 during his cooling-off period.

Which Indians have served as ICC chairman before?

To date, only two Indians have served as the ICC chief. N Srinivasan was the first Indian to serve as the chairman of ICC. In November 2015, Shashank Manohar replaced him and held the office until June 2020.
