IPL 2023: LSG rope in Karun Nair in place of injured KL Rahul image

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have announced that Karnataka batsman Karun Nair will replace the injured KL Rahul for the remainder of 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL).

Rahul has also been ruled out of the ICC World Test Championship Final against Australia, which will be held at The Oval from June 7. The LSG skipper injured his right thigh while fielding during their game against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on May 1. LSG ultimately lost the game by 13 runs.

The wicketkeeper-batsman will undergo surgery on his right thigh.

Who is KL Rahul's replacement Karun Nair?

Karun Nair is a 31-year-old middle-order batsman, who can also play as an opener. He plays for Karnataka in the Indian domestic circuit and made his IPL debut in 2013 with RCB.

However, it was in 2014 that Nair emerged as one of the most exciting uncapped players in the cash-rich league, having been snapped up by Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the auctions.

Nair has represented the Indian national team in Tests and ODIs. In the IPL, he has scored 1496 runs in 68 innings at an average of 23.75 and a strike rate of 127.75, with his highest score being 83.

He joins the Lucknow-based outfit for a fee of INR 50 lakhs.

How have LSG performed in IPL 2023 so far?

LSG currently sit in second place in the IPL standings with 11 points from 10 games, three points below Gujarat Titans (GT), who have seven wins from 10 games (14 points).

Lucknow Super Giants are set to lock horns with Gujarat Titans in a top-of-the-table clash on Sunday, May 7, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
