The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the India squads for an all-format tour of South Africa, starting on December 10 in Durban.

Rohit Sharma along with Virat Kohli have requested the BCCI for a break from the white-ball series. Sharma will lead the Indian team in the Test series while KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav have been named the captain for the ODI and T20I series respectively.

The itinerary comprises three T20Is, three ODIs and two Tests. The tour will commence with the T20I series, which will be followed by the ODI leg, beginning on December 17 in Johannesburg.

The focus will then shift to an all-important Test series, kicking off with the Boxing Day match on December 26 in Centurion.

Notably, India have never won a Test series in South Africa and the upcoming assignment provides them with an opportunity to pass this Test.

On Thursday, 30 November, the BCCI announced the squads for India's tour of South Africa. They are as follows.

Test squad: Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Abhimanyu Easwaran, KS Bharat (wk), KL Rahul (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan, Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Prasidh Krishna

ODI squad: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sai Sudharsan, Tilak Varma, Rajat Patidar, Rinku Singh, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (C)(wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh, Deepak Chahar.

The board also released a statement clarifying that both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had requested a break from the white-ball matches, and that Mohammed Shami's inclusion was subject to fitness as he is currently undergoing a recovery from injury. He was withdrawn from the squad ahead of the first Test, though.

 

Update: Avesh Khan replaces Mohammed Shami for 2nd Test vs South Africa

On December 29, the BCCI issued a statement communicating that fast bowler Avesh Khan, who picked up a fifer for India A in the ongoing unofficial Test match against South Africa A, has been added to the Indian Test squad for the 2nd Test vs South Africa as a replacement for the injured Mohammed Shami.
