The Men in Blue had already sealed their qualification for the semifinals two games ago, but made it nine wins out of nine ahead of the knockout stage of the competition. They will take on New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, who sealed fourth place in the table in their last match, beating Sri Lanka on 9 November.
Here, The Sporting News looks back at the last time India played a World Cup semifinal, and the team's overall record.
What happened the last time India played in a World Cup semi-final?
India's most recent semifinal clash came in the T20 World Cup in 2022, against England. In that match in Adelaide, half-centuries from Virat Kohli (50) and Hardik Pandya (63) lifted the Men in Blue to 168/6. However, the Indian bowlers had no answer to England openers Jos Buttler and Alex Hales, who smashed 80* and 86* respectively to take them to a 10-wicket win in just 16 overs. England went on to beat Pakistan in the final.

India's last semifinal in a 50-over World Cup came in the previous edition in 2019, against New Zealand. The match was played over two days due to rain in Manchester, with New Zealand scoring 239/8 batting first thanks to a patient 74 from Ross Taylor.
In reply, India were reduced to 5/3, 24/4 and 92/6 before Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni put on 116 for the seventh wicket. However, after Jadeja was dismissed, Dhoni was run out by Martin Guptill with 23 still needed off 9 balls. New Zealand won, but ended up losing the final to England.
