Team India were crowned winners of the recent T20 World Cup 2024. The Rohit Sharma-led side beat South Africa in the final on Saturday to end the decade-long ICC trophy drought.

Defending 177, India found themselves wanting, with the opposition needing a run-a-ball in with five overs to go. As circumstances looked bleak, the resurgence of Indian bowlers meant that India secured a seven-run win over the Proteas, to win an ICC event, which was long-time due.

A first ICC win sicne the 2013 Champions Trophy, meant that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from T20I internationals. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah as backed the team to keep these ICC trophies coming, believing that the floodgates are now open.

What did Jay Shah say about India's chances in the upcoming ICC events?

The ICC Champions Trophy will be played in February-March 2025, while the WTC Final will be held later in the year. Shah backed skipper Rohit Sharma to bring more laurels to the country in the coming year. 

"Our next target after the T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, is the World Test Championship Final 2025, and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. I am sure that we will win both these tournaments under Rohit Sharma's captaincy," Jay Shah said.

What did Jay Shah congratulate team India for the T20 World Cup 2024 win?

Shah was elated in Barbados after India were crowned champions of the T20 World Cup 2024. A week after the triumph, he took the opportunity to thank the team members for their resilience in the past year. 

Shah dedicated the victory the the outgoing coach Rahul Dravid. And also to the trio of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja, who announced their retirements from the format after the win.

"This was our third final in the past 12 months. We lost the World Test Championship Final in June 2023. After 10 straight wins, we suffered an astonishing defeat in November 2023 in the ODI World Cup Final," he added.

"I said in Rajkot, that we would win the T20 World Cup 2024 in June 2024. I want to thank Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Hardik Pandya from the bottom of my heart, for the final five overs of the run chase, Shah thanked SKY and India's bowling unit for the historic comeback."

When is the next T20 World Cup?

India won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The next edition of the 20-over WC will be in 2026. India and Sri Lanka are set to jointly host the event. Like 2024, a total of 20 nations will participate in the 2026 T20 World Cup. 

With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli bowed out of the format, we will see a new-look Indian side attempting to defend their title, come 2026.
