India vs Australia 1st Test: Result, analysis and talking points image

India has crushed Australia by an innings and 132 runs in the first Test at Nagpur in a match that was over inside of three days.

The hosts first innings total of 400 was enough to get the job done, with Rohit Sharma smashing 120 and contributions from Axar Patel (84) and Ravindra Jadeja (70).

Australia began their second innings with a 223-run deficit to make up after the 177 they scored in their first dig, but were bowled out for 91 as Ravichandran Ashwin took 5/37.

The only highlight for Australia was the 7/124 taken on Test debut by off-spinner Todd Murphy during India's first innings.

The Sporting News wraps up the first Test with talking points and analysis.

India vs Australia Day 3 talking points and analysis

Where to now for Australia?

After scoring their second-lowest score ever against India, Australia will battle to come back from the humiliation suffered in the first Test.

All batsmen struggled in the tough Indian conditions, with none scoring 50 or more, while only debutant Todd Murphy excelled with the ball.

It's going to be tough for Australia to regroup, especially as they can expect a similar turning pitch in Delhi for the second Test.

India's tail wags while Australia's looks brittle

While Australia's final four batsmen were dismissed for a total of six and 11 across the two innings, India saw number nine Axar Patel hit 84, while number 10 Mohammed Shami made a handy 37.

India's number six Ravindra Jadeja also made a crucial 70 to underline the batting depth that the hosts have down the order.

Australia is going to have a real problem if their tail keeps getting exposed because the likes of Pat Cummings, Todd Murphy, Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland are going to struggle to make runs.

Murphy the only shining light for dismal Australia

It's a worrying sign when your best-performed player is making his debut.

Todd Murphy demanded selection for the second Test with a brilliant haul of 7/124 in India's first innings.

Australia will need its leaders to stand up in subsequent Tests if they are any hope of getting back into the four-Test series.

Who will Australia pick for the second Test?

Australian selectors are going to have several huge selection calls for the second Test after the thrashing they copped in Nagpur.

Todd Murphy has demanded selection alongside Nathan Lyon, which might not have been expected before his debut.

Travis Head will likely come back into the team after his shock axing, with Matt Renshaw likely to make way after scoring two runs across both innings.

Usman Khawaja and David Warner both look out of form at the top of the order also.

You would love to be a fly on the wall at the Australian selectors meeting.
