Just four days after winning the 2023 World Cup, Australia were set to take on their opponents in the final, India, in a five-match T20I series in India.

The hosts had rested a majority of their World Cup squad for this bilateral series, whereas Australia had named seven players plus travelling reserve Tanveer Sangha in the T20 squad. India won the first two matches of the series, chasing down 209 in Visakhapatnam before defending 235 in Thiruvananthapuram.

Ahead of the third T20I in Guwahati on Tuesday, however, the visitors decided to make some major changes to the squad.

Six of the players who participated in the World Cup were withdrawn from the T20 squad, with Cricket Australia naming their replacements as well. According to the board's statement,
World Cup winners Steve Smith and Adam Zampa are understood to have already flown home ahead of tonight's third match in Guwahati in India's north-east, while Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Josh Inglis and Sean Abbott will all return tomorrow.
Batters Josh Phillippe and Ben McDermott have already joined the squad in India, while bowlers Ben Dwarshius and Chris Green will fly to India ahead of the fourth T20I in Raipur.
