The 2023 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) turned out to be an evolutionary one, as the league introduced a new rule, called the Impact Player rule.
The rule added a new flavour to the T20 cricket format by the introduction of a 'substitute', wherein a player from the bench could replace an already existing player in the XI.

A batsman could then come in place of a bowler to add batting depth, while a bowler could come in for a batsman to give more bowling options.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) bowler Tushar Deshpande became the first ever Impact Player in the history of IPL, when he came on in the 2023 curtain raiser against Gujarat Titans (GT).

The first Impact Player of the 2024 edition was Yash Dayal, who came in place of Dinesh Karthik.
Delhi Capitals' Abishek Porel is the most used Impact Player this season so far, coming on thrice as the Impact Sub.
