ICC suspend Harmanpreet Kaur: Indian women's cricket captain set to miss Asian Games matches image

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to hand Indian women's cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur a two-match suspension following two separate breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct.

Kaur was guilty of breach the ICC Code of Conduct during India's recent ODI series against Bangladesh.

Why is Indian women's cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur suspended?

In the third match of the series, Kaur expressed her frustration at an umpire's decision by hitting the wickets with her bat aggressively. Kaur was caught out at slip off Bangladeshi spinner Nahida Alter in the 34th over.

The Indian skipper was initially fined 50 per cent of her match fee for Level 2 offence under ICC code of conduct. She was guilty of breaching Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for players and player personnel.

She was further charged with a level 1 offence as she was found guilty of "public criticism in relation to an incident occuring in an international match l". Kaur had openly criticised the umpire during the presentation ceremony.

What next for Indian women's cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur?

Kaur has been found guilty of breaching level 1 as well as level 2. A level 2 breach carries a penalty of 50 to 100 per cent of the player's match fee and three or four demerit points while level 1 breach involved minimum penalty of upto 50 percent of the match fee. 

Due to a double break the player accumulated four demerit points which gets converted to either suspension of one Test match or two ODIs or T20Is.

As India will next participate in the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, China in September-October, Kaur is set to miss the first two matches of the competition.
