TN captain R Sai Kishore won the toss and elected to bat, but his decision appeared to backfire as the side lost opener Sai Sudharsan in the firts over, before slipping to 17/4. They were eventually bowled out for 146, Vijay Shankar and Washington Sundar propping up the innings with 44 & 43 respectively.
Mumbai finished on 45/2 at the end of day one, with Musheer Khan batting alongside nightwatchman Mohit Avasthi.
How much did Shreyas Iyer score on Ranji Trophy return?
This particular match had an added interest thanks to the profile of one of the players returning for Mumbai. Middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer came into the side, after having been released from the Indian national squad after the second Test match against England.
Iyer came to the crease on day two, with Mumbai at 91/4 in the 38th over, replacing captain Ajinkya Rahane. However, he played an underwhelming knock. After facing a couple of short deliveries from fast bowler Sandeep Warrier, he was knocked over by a fuller delivery from the pacer, for 3 off 8 balls.
Mumbai was reduced to 192 for 7 by lunch on Day 2.
Iyer, along with Ishan Kishan, was excluded from the BCCI's list of centrally contracted players for the 2023/24 season, reportedly for not giving the required importance to domestic cricket. He will now need to work his way back into the setup, and hopefully secure a contract for next season.
