Being 1-0 down in the series, India won the toss and elected to bat first. Courtesy of Yashasvi Jaiswal's incredible double century, the hosts posted 396 runs on the board which, considering the nature of the pitch, seemed like an average total.

In reply, England were cruising on 114-1 at one stage, with stalwarts like Ravichandran Ashwin proving to be ineffective.

However, Bumrah returned with a bang in his third spell, dismissing Joe Root for the eighth time in Tests, and sending Ollie Pope's stumps into oblivion.

The 30-year-old pacer finished with six wickets which also included the wickets of Jonny Bairstow and captain Ben Stokes as England tumbled on 253, handing India a 143-run lead.

Jasprit Bumrah: Best Test average among bowlers with 150+ wickets since 1914

Bumrah reached 150 Test wickets in his 34th Test, becoming the fastest Indian fast bowler to reach the landmark.

In Test cricket history, only one bowler has a better average than Bumrah among those who have picked at least 150 wickets, a certain someone named Sydney Barnes.

Barnes was a right-handed fast bowler from England who played 27 Tests between 1901 and 1914, picking up 189 wickets at an astonishing average of 16.43.

Bumrah's average of 20.28 is the best average in Test cricket history since 1914.
