Home teams winning the World Cup? Australia break the jinx in style after comprehensive win over India image

Australia have been crowned the world champions after a comprehensive win over hosts India in Ahmedabad on Sunday. The Aussies broke a peculiar trend after 16 years by beating Rohit Sharma & Co, who had the home advantage behind them.

With the famous result at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Australia have now won the ODI World Cup on a record six occasions.

Put in to bat first, India were bowled out for 240 runs. Virat Kohli (54) and KL Rahul (66) scored half-centuries, but found it difficult to force the issue against a disciplined bowling attack on a sluggish surface.

In fact, India went without scoring a boundary for 97 balls in the middle, courtesy of a slowish pitch. Mitchell Starc bagged three wickets, while both Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins picked two each.

In response, Australia were carried by a heroic knock under pressure by Travis Head. The Southpaw scored a blistering knock of 137 runs, snuffing out any hope India might have had.
