In this article, The Sporting News looks at the performance of host countries that have hosted the ICC Champions Trophy.

How have the host countries performed in ICC Champions trophy?

The ICC Champions Trophy was introduced in the year 1998 by the International Cricket Council (ICC), whose main goal was to generate funds for countries which did not have a Test status.

The tournament used to be termed as the "Mini World Cup", with the first-ever Champions Trophy being hosted by Bangladesh.

The Champions Trophy as a tournament was discontinued in the year 2017 as the ICC wanted only a single competition for each of the three formats.

However, the ICC reversed their decision in 2021 and announced plans to bring back the tournament for the 2025 and 2029 editions.

Over the 8 editions of the tournament thus far, only Sri Lanka have won the ICC Champions Trophy as the host nation, in 2002. Although the trophy was shared between India and Sri Lanka that year, due to a rain washout during both the matchday and reserve day.
