Hardik and Krunal Pandya become first brothers to captain teams in IPL image

Captaincy is perhaps one of the most important roles in any cricket team. A captain demonstrates leadership, calmness, and authority over colleagues. There have been some legendary captains in Indian Premier League (IPL)and T20 cricket in general.

Many star players, both Indian and foreign, have captained in the IPL. But India all-rounders and siblings Hardik and Krunal Pandya have now set a unique record in the IPL when they became captains of their respective sides.

Krunal was appointed captain of LSG after an injury to regular skipper KL Rahul. And when he captained LSG against CSK on May 4, it was the first time in the history of the IPL that any two brothers have captained a franchise at least once.

The Pandya Brothers - Hardik and Krunal - are the only entry in this list. Hardik is the regular skipper of reigning champions Gujarat Titans.

Hardik Pandya's journey to IPL captaincy

Both Hardik and Krunal started their IPL journey at Mumbai Indians. Integral part of the team, they enjoyed huge success, winning the IPL title multiple times under Rohit Sharma's captaincy.

However, in 2022, the franchise released them as teams were allowed to retain only four players and the rest were put up for auction. Hardik was chosen as a draft pick by the newly-formed Gujarat Titans. Whereas Krunal went to another newly-formed franchise, the Lucknow Super Giants.

Immediately, Hardik was named captain of the Titans. In his first season as captain, the younger Pandya achieved glory by leading the team to the Indian Premier League trophy.

In 2023, Hardik has led his team to the top of the league table after nine matches. His winning percentage as the captain of Gujarat Titans is 72%, winning 18 out of 25 games across two seasons.

Krunal Pandya's journey to IPL captaincy

Krunal Pandya marked history when he was appointed the stand-in-captain of the Lucknow Super Giants. The decision was taken, following an injury to club captain KL Rahul during their game against RCB.

Krunal will now take up the captaincy role for the rest of the season. He was seen as captain in LSG's game against CSK on May 4, which unfortunately was washed away due to rain.
