Gujarat Titans started their Indian Premier League title defence with an impressive win over Chennai Super Kings, securing victory by five wickets.

Shubman Gill led with the bat as he scored 63 off 36 balls while Rashid Khan ended with figures of 2/26 from his four overs. Khan also scored important runs at the end as GT secured the win with four balls to spare.

The Titans won the toss and chose to bowl first on their home ground. Ruturaj Gaikwad got off to a great start and ended on 92 off 50 balls, scoring nine sixes and four boundaries. He did not receive much help from his teammates, with Moeen Ali's 23 off 17 the next highest score, and that left CSK short of their intended score.

Joshua Little claimed a wicket on his IPL debut while Mohammed Shami picked up his 100th wicket in the competition as they restricted CSK to 178. The home side lost Kane Williamson to injury after he injured his knee while going for a catch in the deep.

GT paced their innings in a very similar way to CSK, Gill and Wriddihan Saha played aggressively in the powerplay, before Sai Sudharsan and Vijay Shankar did the same.

20-year-old Rajvardhan Hangargekar took three wickets for 36 runs on his debut in the tournament but the CSK bowlers could not produce the goods at the death.

With 23 runs needed off the final two overs, Khan and Rahul Tewatia both scored a six and four each to take GT over the line. CSK conceded a total of 12 extras in the innings and had a few fielding mishaps.

The Titans are of course top of the table now with two points and a positive net run rate of 0.514.

The Sporting News was following the match live and provided over-by-over coverage and highlights below.

Gujarat Titans vs Chennai Super Kings updates, highlights from IPL 2023 match

GT WIN! (182/5): Deshpande bowls a wide and then Tewatia ends the game with a six followed by a powerful boundary down the ground! The Titans start their title defence with an important win.

GT 19th over (171/5): Rashid Khan comes up big for GT as he hits a huge six before a clever four to take his side eight runs away from victory.

GT 18th over (156/5): The game is very much in the balance after a tidy over from Hangargekar. GT will need at least one big over if they want to win this.

WICKET! It's Hangargekar again with the wicket, but Santner takes a brilliant catch to remove Shankar for 27! The fielder falls backwards in order to hold onto the ball after it goes high into the air.

GT 17th over (149/4): Chahar has a brilliant over for the Super Kings with just four runs coming from it. The required run rate is now 10 for GT.

GT 16th over (145/4): Miscommunication between Stokes and Conway on the boundary rope gifts Shankar an easy four, but Santner restricts GT to seven runs off the over. The final timeout of the game is taken.

GT 15th over (138/4): It was not the perfect over for Deshpande in terms of runs, but the wicket of Gill is still a huge boost for CSK. The bowler has conceded 40 runs off his three overs.

WICKET! Deshpande manages to get the big wicket of Gill! The batter skies his shot and Gaikwad positions himself well to take the all important catch.

GT 14th over (127/3): It is a loose over from Hangargekar and he concedes 13 from it, including two wides and two boundaries. GT need 52 more runs to win.

GT 13th over (114/3): Jadeja finishes his spell in style as he concedes just three runs and gets a wicket. His final figures are 1/29.

WICKET! Jadeja picks up a huge scalp as he bowls out Pandya! The batter looks to play a sweep shot but the ball clips the top of off stump.

GT 12th over (111/2): Gill brings up his 15th IPL half-century off just 30 balls as he looks to help GT start the tournament with a big win.

GT 11th over (106-2): Gill plays two beautiful strokes to bring up the 100 for GT and move himself onto 49. CSK will need a flurry of wickets before the 16-over mark.

GT 10th over (93/2): It was important for CSK to break that partnership, but it brings Pandya to the crease. Hangargekar is having a great impact for his side.

WICKET! Hangargekar comes back to take his second wicket of the game! Sudharsan is reaching for the ball and edges it into the hands of Dhoni.

GT 9th over (89/1): Conway puts in an unorthodox slide tackle to stop the ball from reaching the boundary. GT will be happy with how the innings is going so far.

GT 8th over (82/1): Both Sudharsan and Gill hit boundaries against Santner to push the run rate up. The first timeout of the innings is taken.

GT 7th over (71/1): The Titans are doing well to find singles and doubles at every opportunity they get. CSK really need a wicket.

GT 6th over (65/1): Santner had a good start to his over with three dot balls, but he concedes nine off his final three. GT are keeping the pressure on CSK.

GT 5th over (56/1): Deshpande has been targeted in this powerplay, going for 29 in his two overs. Gill is getting into his stride now as he looks to increase the run rate.

GT 4th over (41/1) : It was a difficult start for Hangargekar as he bowled a no ball followed by a wide, but the wicket of Saha will give him great confidence. The injured Williamson is subbed off for Sudharsan.

WICKET! 20-year-old Hangargekar makes the breakthrough for CSK as Saha is the first man out! Dube takes a great diving catch in the deep to remove the opener.

GT 3rd over (29/0): Saha flicks the ball for six off a short delivery as the Titans are doing well to just keep the runs flowing with singles and doubles.

GT 2nd over (18/0): Deshpande does not have the initial impact Dhoni would have wanted as the bowler goes for 12 in his first over.

GT 1st over (3/0): It is a good start for Chahar as he only concedes three runs off the first over. Deshpande has also been substituted in for Rayudu.

GT TO BAT NEXT

CSK 20th over (178/7): Dhoni hits back-to-back boundaries to get CSK to 178 at the end of the 20 overs. It is certainly a defendable total, but GT have the firepower to chase it down.

CSK 19th over (165/7): CSK be aiming for at least 180 heading into this final over. With Shami's four overs also done, Little will bowl the last six.

WICKET! Dube hits a six but Shami replies with a wicket on the next ball! He goes with a short ball and Dube skies his shot. Khan takes a good catch to complete the wicket.

CSK 18th over (155-6): Joseph ends his spell with figures of 2/33. After conceding 18 off his first over, he will be very happy with how he finished his innings.

WICKET! Joseph picks up his second wicket of the over as Jadeja lasts just two balls! Shankar takes the catch just in front of the boundary rope as MS Dhoni walks out to the crease.

WICKET! After a review showing a fair delivery from Joseph, Gaikwad is out for 92! He tried to find the boundary rope after the bowler gave him a full toss, but he is caught by Gill at long-on.

CSK 17th over (151/4): Gaikwad hits a big six off the first ball to try and get CSK moving again, but Dube at the other end is really struggling.

CSK 16th over (140/4): GT have conceded just 19 runs over the last three overs to slow CSK down. Rashid Khan comes back for his final over next.

CSK 15th over (133/4): The momentum is very much in favour of the Titans now going into the final five overs of this match.

CSK 14th over (125/4): Gujarat Titans have slowed CSK down over the last two overs as Joseph and Little find their rhythm after their expensive start.

CSK 13th over (121/4): Little gets the wicket the Titans needed, but dangerman Gaikwad is still out there. The second timeout of the innings is taken.

WICKET! Joshua Little gets his first IPL wicket as he bowls Rayudu out! The batter came down the track but misses the line of the ball. Much-needed breakthrough for GT.

CSK (12.3): There is a temporary break in play as Kane Williamson receives treatment for a knee injury.

CSK 12th over (114/3): Rayudu now gets involved with a big six on the leg side from the final ball of the over. Pandya needs to find a breakthrough if he wants to stop CSK from reaching the 200 mark.

CSK 11th over (100/3): Gaikwad brings up the 100-run mark for CSK with a huge six off the bowling of Joshua Little. The reigning champions are under a bit of pressure at the moment.

CSK 10th over (93/3): Khan slows the run rate down, conceding just three runs from his third over. Pandya will want to save his final over for later in the innings.

CSK 9th over (90/3): Gaikwad scores three sixes off Joseph's first over, bringing up his 50 in just 23 balls.

CSK 8th over (72/3): Khan is stopping CSK from piling on the runs, picking up two big wickets in his two overs. Gaikwad will want more of the strike.

WICKET! Rashid Khan picks up his second wicket as Stokes heads back to the dugout! The bowler forces an outside edge and Saha takes the catch behind the stumps again.

CSK 7th over (64/2): Gaikwad has now scored 36 runs off 17 balls after hitting Pandya for back-to-back sixes in this over. He was almost run out on the final ball but survived.

CSK 6th over (51/2): Khan swings momentum back towards the home side at the end of the powerplay with the wicket of Ali. Ben Stokes comes out to bat. There is also a timeout.

WICKET! Rashid Khan takes the wicket of Ali! The batter tries to continue his aggressive approach but the ball hits the underside of his bat and goes into the wicket-keeper's gloves!

CSK 5th over (46/1): The Super Kings are really turning up the heat as they score 17 off Shami's third over! Ali scored 15 of those runs, including a six off a free hit.

CSK 4th over (29/1): It is not the start Joshua Little would have wanted to his IPL career. CSK score 15 off his first over, including a big six from Gaikwad.

CSK 3rd over (14/1): A fantastic second over from Shami as he picks up the wicket of Conway and concedes just one run. Moeen Ali joined Gaikwad out in the middle.

WICKET! Shami picks up his 100th IPL wicket as he bowls Conway out for one run! The batter tried tried to drive the ball back past Shami but completely misses it!

CSK 2nd over (13/0): A very productive over for CSK as Gaikwad hits two fours to put some pressure on Pandya.

CSK 1st over (2/0): Conway and Gaikwad start slowly as Shami concedes just two runs from his first over, including one leg bye.
