India's search for the next head coach of the women's cricket team continues as former South Africa player and the 2011 World Cup-winning coach Gary Kirsten has turned down BCCI's offer to coach the women's cricket team.

According to ESPNcricinfo, BCCI wanted to name Gary Kirsten as the head coach of the Indian women's cricket team. However, because the Proteas coach had IPL (Gujarat Titans) and other league commitments, that was not possible.

“ESPNcricinfo has learnt the board was keen on appointing Gary Kirsten for the top job but wasn't able to get him onboard due to his commitments in the IPL and other leagues," the report read.

Amol Majumdar and Charlotte Edwards in contention for India role

Another candidate for the position is reportedly Amol Mazumdar. In addition to him, there is interim head coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar, who took over for Ramesh Powar after he left the position in December to become the spin bowling coach at the National Cricket Academy under VVS Laxman.

Another candidate for the position is rumoured to be Charlotte Edwards, a former England captain who currently serves as the head coach of Mumbai Indians' women's side in the Women's Premier League (WPL). However, Edwards hasn't submitted an application for the job as of yet.

“The new coach is likely to be given a two-year term to begin with, especially because there are two ICC events – the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh in 2024 and the 50-over World Cup in India in 2025 – within this period,” the report added.
