A fire broke out at the iconic Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata on Wednesday evening. The mishap occurred amidst the ongoing renovation work at the stadium ahead of the blockbuster event of the year.

On Wednesday, a short circuit occurred in the dressing room at the Eden Gardens. It is reported that various possessions of players kept in the dressing room at the time of the fire were damaged and burnt to ashes.

However, as per reports, the fire was extinguished very soon, with the help of two fire engines. Not much damage was done to human life. The fire broke out days after ICC officials inspected the stadium in-lieu of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

How did the fire break out?

The fire broke out in the false ceiling in one of the dressing rooms of the Eden Gardens. Short circuit is cited as the cause of the fire, but it is yet to be confirmed.

The fire force was immediately pressed into service and the situation was controlled soon with the help of two fire engines. Players' belongings lying in the dressing room were burnt.

How many World Cup matches will be played at the Eden Gardens? 

The Eden Gardens stadium is set to host five matches at the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. The five matches also include the second semifinal. 

The Eden Gardens is expected to have a new look for the mega event in October. The stadium is getting renovated, so as to host some hot clashes in the Cricket World Cup. India will play South Africa at the Eden Gardens on November 5, 2023.
