Following the wins for England in the first two Tests, the three-Test match series between the Three Lions and Sri Lanka will move to The Oval in London where England will be hosting the visitors for the final game of the tour from Friday, September 5.

After a five-wicket win in Manchester in the first Test where the hosts chased down Sri Lanka’s fighting total of 205, England ran over the Lankans again at The Lord’s where they came out victorious by 190 runs.

Batting first in the second Test, England put up 427 on the board, courtesy of centuries from Joe Root (143) and Gus Atkinson (118) where the duo also added 92 runs for the 7th wicket.

Atkinson continued to score runs after Root’s wicket as he reached his maiden Test century while adding another 85 runs for the 8th wicket with Matthew Potts. Meanwhile, Asitha Fernando added his name to the famous Lord’s honours board with his 5/102.

Despite Kamindu Mendis’ valiant 74, England managed to bundle out Sri Lanka for just 196 runs. Joe Root, in the second innings, yet again scored a century to go past Alastair Cook’s 33 Test centuries to become the Englishman with the most Test hundred after just equalling the record in the first innings.

After setting up a target of 282, England, led by the first innings centurion, Atkinson, who took a fifer bowled Sri Lanka out for 292 after 58 and 50 from Dinesh Chandimal and captain Dhananjaya de Silva.

In the series, so far, Root has led the charts for most runs with 350 in 4 innings, including 2 centuries and a fifty while Kamidu Mendis with a century and a fifty has top-scored for the Asians with 203 runs. Wicketkeeper, Jamie Smith also scored his maiden Test century in Manchester.

With the ball, Asitha Fernando has taken the most wickets (14), followed by the hero from the last match, Gus Atkinson (11).

Considering the recent form of both sides and the familiarity with the conditions at home, England is very well laid out to finish the series with a whitewash. However, the way Sri Lanka has shown spirits in the second innings of both matches, expect Sri Lanka to give a decent account of themselves to cap off the tour.
